NOW WHAT? WHY MUST WE DO THIS? : WHY MUST WE DO THIS? IT IS THE LAW! This training is an OSHA compliance requirement! Review of what is new Review where your buildings Protective Equipment is located Exposure follow-up & Reporting What is a blood-borne pathogen? : What is a blood-borne pathogen? A disease causing organism that can be spread through blood contact, other bodily substances or other potentially infectious material. The 3 we are most concerned with are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. : WHAT IS HEPATITIS? Hepat (liver) + itis (inflammation) Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It may be caused by viruses, alcohol, drugs and other toxins. The three main hepatitis viruses are hepatitis A, B & C. HIV and AIDS : HIV and AIDS Last year 449 new cases of HIV were reported in Wisconsin. In Sheboygan County alone, there have been 91 cases of HIV reported to date. A total increase of 3 cases in 2009. Symptoms of AIDS : Symptoms of AIDS Fever Swollen Glands Diarrhea Extreme weight loss Skin lesions Mental Disorientation Category 1 Staff : Category 1 Staff If you are classified as Category 1, you are required to have this annual bloodborne pathogens/body substance isolation training. Category 1 determination is based on an employee’s job duties and input from your principal, school nurse and/or human resources. You may be a category I this year and next year a II. Categories change based on an employee’s duties. Examples include: coaches, custodians, first aid providers, lifeguards,small child care providers, nurses, and others who are exposed to blood or body fluids as part of their job duties. Do you know where to find your personal protective equipment? : Do you know where to find your personal protective equipment? Protection totes? Sharps containers? Gloves? Gowns & shoe covers? Red bags? How to reorder supplies? Building Custodians are responsible to assure kits are maintained/stocked. What gets Red Bagged? : What gets Red Bagged? Only items that are: Able to Drip Pourable Squeezable Able to Flake Custodians arrange for transport to Central Office. Clean Up Procedures : Clean Up Procedures Apply vinyl or nitrile gloves. Solidify any liquid spill. Spray with disinfectant(Triad) Dispose in double bag. Spray with Aire Care or End Bac II. Remove gloves & wash hands. Decontaminate equipment. Significant Exposure : Significant Exposure When someone else’s blood or body fluid enters your mouth, eye, open sore, etc. Contact your EAP/Wellness Coordinator, school nurse or your administrator if you are unsure if your have experienced a significant exposure What do I do? : What do I do? Treat at the scene. Wash the exposed area immediately with soap and warm water. Contact your administrator and your EAP/Wellness Coordinator to determine if the exposure is significant. Fill out the Exposure Form located in your school office. Go to the Aurora Sheboygan Clinic ASAP for blood work (within 24 hours). The student will need to go to his/her clinic of choice for blood work as well. Reporting : Reporting Use the correct incident reporting form. If a student is exposed, the building administrator is required to contact both sets of parents. The Source Testing Information sheet must be completed and signed by the source parent indicating their responsibility to have their child tested by state law. (WI Act 271) Hepatitis B Vaccine : Hepatitis B Vaccine All Category 1 employees must have their vaccine dates or a Declination Waiver on file with Human Resources. This is YOUR responsibility. Hepatitis B vaccine clinic dates are located on the district calendar, typically the 3rd Tuesday of the month. MORAL OF THE STORY… : MORAL OF THE STORY… If it is wet… and it is not yours DON’T TOUCH IT! Wellness Update : Wellness Update Health Risk Appraisals: --October & November --Sign up on line Flu shots will again be offered FREE of charge for those who participate in the HRA.
