Premium member Presentation Transcript Gesture : Gesture What is Gesture : What is Gesture Gesture is the movement made by hands, arms, shoulders, head and torso (Trunk of the body). A well timed gesture makes the listener to understand. It also adds greater value to what is being said. Similarly, an ungainly gesture destroys the effectiveness of message. When a Gesture is useful. : When a Gesture is useful. Gesture Clarifies one's ideas if it should be suited to the audience and occasion. Gestures are more numerous than any forms of Non- Verbal communication. It has been observed that there are more than 700,000 varied hand gestures and the meanings derived from them may vary from individual to individual. How a gesture should be & Should not be : How a gesture should be & Should not be Gesture should be natural and spontaneous (happening fro natural impulse, not caused or suggested from outside). Gesture should not divert (turn in another direction) the attention of the listener and distract (draw away) from the Speaker’s message. Gestures should not be irritating (cause discomfort) . Types of Gestures : Types of Gestures Enumerative – Numbers. (gesture used to count numbers) Descriptive – Size of the objects. (gesture used to show the size of the objects. Symbolic – abstract concepts. (gesture used to show the unseen object using Symbols. E.g. to mention beauty shows the symbol as Rose). Locative – location of the object. (gesture used to show the location of the object. Emphatic – emphasis (gesture used to show the importance of an object.) Facial Expression : Facial Expression Facial expressions play an important part along with posture and gesture. The face is the most expressive part of the body. Some facial expressions are common to all cultures. Facial expressions and its meanings…. : Facial expressions and its meanings…. A Smile – Friendliness. A Frown – Discontent Raised eye brows – Disbelief Tightened jaw muscles – Antagonism ( Active opposition). Facial expressions are subtle (difficult to describe). One can use the facial expression to aid ( help), inhibit ( restriction) , or complement one’s communication.
