Cultural Diversity ofAfrican Americans :

Cultural Diversity ofAfrican Americans

History :

History African American culture in the United States can be traced back to the 1600’s with the advent of slavery in the United States. Two major events that shaped their culture are the ending of slavery with the Civil war between the states in 1845 and the civil rights movement of the 1960’s. Much of the culture of the African American people comes from oral tradition as slaves were not taught to read or write.

culture :

culture Today’s unique culture stems from these traditions in the cuisine, music, art and language of African Americans. Religion is important in the lives of many black Americans. Most are Protestant Christians, but 14% of African Americans are Muslim. Traditions in special events such as weddings include “jumping the broom” an activity that can be traced back to Africa during slavery.

religion :

religion The spirituality of death is very important in African American culture. Members of the church are with the family when their loved one passes. Much of the family is present and death is seen as a part of life. Many black families celebrate “homegoing” instead of a funeral for their loved one rather than mourning a loss. Sundays are important as a day of worship. Most families dress for the occasion. Women in particular wear festive hats to church.

cuisine :

cuisine Traditionally prepared “soul food” is very often high in fats, sodium and starches. Fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, ham hocks and blackeyed peas are commonly served meals. These foods were needed when heavy labor was the main occupation of African Americans. With today’s lifestyles these foods contribute to obesity, hypertension, heart disease and diabetes.

Family :

Family Family is important to African Americans. According to the 2003 census 43% of families are headed single parents, mostly women. Extended families provide strength and support to them. Many of these families have a lower socioeconomic status, are under-educated and underemployed. 12% of grandparents are raising their children’s children.

healthcare :

healthcare When providing healthcare to African Americans one should understand their history and culture. Some black Americans believe illness is caused by improper nutrition, natural causes or the will of God for improper behavior. Many patients wait a long time to seek healthcare, they first will try prayer giving God time to heal. Home remedies, folk healers and rituals will also be tried before seeking medical advice.

Healthcare :

Healthcare When meeting patients it is not considered respectful to address them by their first names until given permission. Patients often times have difficulty with medical terminology, having different names for diseases and health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, strokes and heart disease. Patients should have members of their families present if they so wish to explain and increase understanding of disease processes

healthcare :

healthcare When making important decisions about healthcare, black Americans often want their family, community or church members involved. It is often necessary to take patients need for spirituality into consideration when medical treatment is needed. Listen carefully and watch for verbal and nonverbal cues to what the patients are telling the health care provider.
