BWEA : BWEA 340 Corporate Members All sectors of the industry Government Industry interface Lobbying (Energy and Planning policy) Coordination with other trade associations Best practice Information source Overview : Overview The UK power market and the potential for wind The UK’s offshore programme Round One Moving into the build phase Round Two UK Power Portfolio : UK Power Portfolio Total installed capacity – 79GW UK Electricity supply (net) – 355TWh Hydro 2% Waste/biomass 0.5% Wind 0.8% 772MW now installed – 1125 turbines (124MW offshore – 62 turbines) 40% of European wind resource : 40% of European wind resource >9m/s 8-9m/s >7-8m/s >5.5-7m/s ..and even more offshore : ..and even more offshore >9m/s 8-9m/s >7-8m/s >5.5-7m/s Starting to deliver : Starting to deliver BWEA expects about 300MW to be built in 2004 Three times more than 2003 Including Scroby Sands Should increase even more in 2005 as offshore begins to take off The UK’s offshore programme : The UK’s offshore programme Despite large resource onshore, development has been slow to lift off In addition to offshore resource, UK has huge experience of exploiting marine energy Move offshore logical Allows large tranches of capacity to be developed Offshore now key part of UK renewable policy Slide 10: Round One ~500 turbines 1.5GW ca. 1% of total UK electricity supply Current Status : Current Status Round Two : Round Two Outcome : Outcome Developments much larger than Round One Largest project 1,200MW Further offshore (8-13km limits) Some outside territorial waters Construction Start in 2007 at the earliest Will be phased through a number of seasons Round 2 projects : Round 2 projects 15 projects awarded options to lease seabed in December 2003 Total of 5.4-7.2GW Projects due to start consenting process from early in 2005 Moving forward with Round 2 : Moving forward with Round 2 Round 2 build depends on satisfactory outcome of 05/06 RO review Providing suitable framework for bankable projects Round 2 costs may remain high With good learning could be 85% of Round 1 Experience so far and steel prices keeping costs up, however Should provide a significant proportion of 2010 renewable target Grid – the key? : Grid – the key?
