Backup issues : Backup issues Most people only backup when they have a problem. That is usually in most cases to late! Most folks do not have a regular Backup schedule. Back Up Long term Options : Back Up Long term Options Back up to Magnetic tapes – requires DLT drives Very expensive, but very reliable You have remove and replace tapes often Limited to 800 Gbps – 1.6 Terabyte Back Up to CD / DVD disks – Reasonable costs, very reliable You have to replace DVD inventory monthly Limited in size of data that can be burned to disk 1.4 Gbps - 8Gbps of data per DVD depending on Drive you have 700 – 800 Mbps per CD on average Back up to external drives Most reasonable in price $80 on the low side to $350 on the higher side Can be stacked to offer multiple Terabytes of storage It is a hard drive so it requires regular maintenance Back Up to offsite storage sites Pay Monthly recurring charges or annual fees Really do not know where your data is being stored How can you tell how secure it is and who has access Anyone can look big on the internet / how much do you really know about this company How do they back up your data and what guarantee do they offer on your data if it is lost or stolen Create Image Requires good software Have to have an understanding of Hardware, drivers, and operating systems Once configured very easy to use, Remember like a Restore Point it is only a snap shot in time Unlike a Restore Point images backup everything i.e. OS, Pics, Music, Applications… Back Up Short term Options : Back Up Short term Options Create a Restore points Remember it only is a snap shot in time Restore Points are only good for restoring OS to a know working condition. Does not backup files or applications Back up to portable external drives Make sure it is secure i.e. encryption Has to be small enough to easily transport and use Back Up to USB Sticks Cheep does not equate to reliable! Remember it is day to day quick back up not long term! Should be encrypted if personal or financial data is kept Easy to loose and break - Take care of it System Restore : System Restore What is a Restore : What is a Restore There are really Three types of restores System Restore Restores your computer to a point in time mainly used to fix software or Operating system issues Does nothing for your Pictures, files, music Image Restore Restores your computer to an exact point in time for everything i.e. OS, pictures, music…. Computer restore Brings your computer back to factory image Erases Everything except for what the computer came with when you bought it System Restore : System Restore System Restore takes snapshots of your computer system and saves them as restore points. Restore points mark configuration places to return to when things were working well Once enabled System Restore automatically tracks changes to your computer and creates restore points before major changes are to occur. One good example of this would be before installing any new software or updates. User Friendly Windows System Restore Wizard makes it easy to use Slide 11: Please check available hard drive space before doing any steps below – Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. In the System Properties dialog box, on the System Restore tab, use the slider to increase the allocated disk space, and then click OK. Use the maximum amount of space if available. Slide 12: In the Settings dialog box, shown in Figure 1, use the slider to increase the disk space, and then click OK twice. Figure 1 How to Create Restore Point : How to Create Restore Point Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. On the Welcome screen, click Create Restore Point and then click Next. On the next screen you will give your restore point a name description, then click Create. You will then see a screen telling you that your restore point was created, with the data and time stamp and the name of the restore you created. **Congratulations!** Your restore point was create, you can close all windows and go about your business. Slide 16: Create a Name to remember your restore, by clicking in the box and typing, then click create How to do a Restore : How to do a Restore Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next. On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to then click Next The Confirm Restore Selection Page will come up. You will need to confirm that you do want to do a Restore, please be sure to read the information on this page, click next to initiate the Restore process. Your computer will reboot and perform a restore. Once the restore is complete you will receive a screen pop up telling you that your Restore was successful. **Congratulations!** you have just performed a Restore.
