Hussein Dr B. P. Yadav Dr M. Anderson H Matumo M Bafana B N Soro K Molosiwa K Seipone Background : Background Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are a common problem worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa has a disproportionately high STI burden. The Southern African region is heavily affected by the HIV epidemic as well as STIs. Epidemiological and biological evidence strongly suggest that conventional STIs increase the risk of individuals transmitting and acquiring HIV. Thus control of conventional STIs is essential to limit the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In the 2002 STI survey of the Ministry of Health the prevalence of HIV among males with symptomatic STIs was 67%, 56% among symptomatic women and 42% among female (FP) participants. Microbiological Surveillance of STIs n Botswana : Microbiological Surveillance of STIs n Botswana Microbiological surveys are an essential component of any STI surveillance programme. Last such survey in Botswana was undertaken in 2002. Clients with STIs attending Primary Health Care facilities in the public and private sectors as well as asymptomatic clients accessing family planning services were involved. 3 cities were covered: Gaborone, Francistown & Selebi Phikwe. Method: Sampling and Enrolment I : Method: Sampling and Enrolment I Gaborone Francistown Selebi Phikwe Chobe Sout-east S/Palapye Gantsi Sites selection criteria considered: Major cities – Gaborone and Francistown. Busy mining town with a lot of migrant workers - Selebi Phikwe. Cross-border districts - Chobe and S/East, Gantsi. High Transit district- S/Palapye. Historical number of STIs reported through the clinical surveillance system. Availability of laboratory facilities and expertise. In all, 7 Hospitals, 16 clinics and 9private clinics will be involved. Objective : Objective To estimate HIV prevalence among person infected with sexually transmitted infections Results : Results Out of 1910 received form 30 were rejected Result of HIV Testing : Result of HIV Testing Because some participants were tested recently for HIV and some were on ART , therefore they were excluded from the HIV testing; and finally out of 1880, 1301 participants were tested for HIV Discussion : Discussion The HIV prevalence was 4.2% (90/2138) among patients attending STI clinic in Amsterdem (Fennema et al 1993: STI) Non-ulcerative STD were risk factors for sexual transmission of HIV-1 in women in Kinshasa, Zaire (Laga et al 1993: AIDS) Conclusion & Recommendation : Conclusion & Recommendation It seems STI is an important risk factor for sexual transmission of HIV among both sexes in Botswana Prevention and early diagnosis and treatment of STI should be considered as important strategy to combat HIV epidemic in Botswana The identification of treatable STD as risk factors for HIV-1 transmission offers an important additional strategy for the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
