Beth & MaritThe story of an Amish girl and a Millennial girl

Who are the Amish? :

Who are the Amish? The Amish are a Christian church that traces its roots to the Protestant Reformation in medieval Europe. Amish people accept basic Christian beliefs. They migrated from Europe to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. No Amish remain in Europe. Today they live in nearly 425 different places in 27 states and the province of Ontario. Their population totals 233,000.

Slide 3:

Their unique practices make them one of America’s most interesting and colorful religious groups. What is typical about them is that they dress the same way people did back in the 17th century. Also, 95% of them reject all modern technology, including all electrical devices and means of transportation and communication. They live isolated from other ethical groups and form their own society within the society. They have no social insurances and their children do not go to regular schools

Who are the millennials? :

Who are the millennials? Generation Y makes up over 70 million people in the U.S. With those born between 1977 and 1994 included, they make up over 20% of today’s population. The largest generation since the baby-boomers, the Millennials are defined by their numbers. They will have a huge social and economic impact.

Slide 8:

There are three major characteristics of the Millennial group: They are racially and ethnically diverse They are extremely independent because of divorce, day care, single parents, latchkey parenting, and the technological revolution that they are growing up alongside They feel empowered; thanks to overindulgent parents, they have a sense of security and are optimistic about the future.

Beginning on their 16th birthday, Amish youth enter a kind of decision-making phase called a "simmie" period where in they are to contemplate weather or not they will maintain or renounce their Amish identity. During this time, they are exposed to deviant behaviors and attitudes.

This is the story of Beth, an Amish girl who goes for her "simmie" period to the Netherlands, to visit Marit. :

Slide 15:

Once upon a time, there was a girl called Beth. She lived in Pennsylvania, USA in an Amish society. On her 16th birthday she had to go away from her home for her " "simmie" period, to decide if after being exposed to the outside world, she still wanted to be part of the Amish society.

Slide 16:

Beth decided to write a letter to Marit (a Dutch Millennial girl),with the quill and ink, which were the presents of her dad for her 16th birthday. She sealed the letter with paraffin from the candle.

Slide 17:

Marit received Beth’s letter. She hurried to answer her by e-mail, but suddenly she realized that Beth does not use modern technology, such as a computer, internet or even not electricity. Marit then decided to write her a letter by hand.

Slide 18:

Beth finally received the reply from Marit. Her father, John, bids farewell to her for a year. She was very sad that she had to leave the safety offered by her community.

Slide 19:

Beth finally arrived in The Netherlands. She knocked on Marit’s door quietly, but unfortunately nobody opened. She tried to knock harder, and finally Marit opened the door. The facial expressions of the girls differ, Marit was happy to meet Beth, but Beth was having second thoughts. Before letting her into the room, Marit showed her the door bell, which is not part of the Amish society.

Slide 20:

As the weeks passed by, Marit introduced Beth to different modern technologies, such as the computer, hot-plate, the tv and mobile phone. Beth was confused about the differences between Amish peoples lifestyle and of the Millennials.

Slide 21:

Not only did she have to get used to the technology, but also to wearing the right garments. Beth did not like the idea of it all, although agreeing to wear them on her own wish seemed a far better idea than being forced to do it.

Slide 22:

After a couple of months, Beth was fully integrated into the society and living with modern technology became her latest interest.

Slide 23:

She started looking a Millennial and it even seemed like she was becoming one on the inside.

After one year, John was waiting for her comeback at the same place where he bade her farewell. He was feverish to meet her again. When he saw her walking with her friend, dressed differently, he wasbewildered. :
