NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo The Enemy We Fight! Bed Bug (Cimex lectularius)

Slide 8:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo What are Bed Bugs? The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is the best adapted to human environments. They have been with humans since our ancestors lived in caves (originally fed mostly on bats.)  Bed Bugs are small insects that feed mainly on human blood.  Bed Bugs are mostly active when we sleep, attracted to our body heat and the carbon dioxide we exhale.

Slide 9:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo It’s not about Filth!  Bedbugs are often erroneously associated with filth.  They are attracted by exhaled carbon dioxide, not by dirt, and they feed on blood, not waste.  In short, the cleanliness of their environments has no effect on bedbugs. Their numbers may be reduced temporarily by vacuuming, but will recover and require vacuuming again, and again.

Slide 10:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo How to Spot a Bed Bug  Adult bedbugs are reddish brown, flattened, oval, and wingless, with microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance.  A common misconception is that they are not visible to the naked eye, but adults grow to 4 to 5 mm (one-eighth to three-sixteenths of an inch) in length and do not move quickly enough to escape the notice of an attentive observer.

Slide 11:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo The Bed Bug Life Cycle

Slide 12:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Bed Bug Biology  Bed Bug nymphs pass through five molting stages before they reach maturity.  They must feed once during each of these stages.  At room temperature, it takes about 5 weeks for a bedbug to pass from hatching, through the stages, to maturity.  They become reproductively active only at maturity.  There may be 3 or more generations a year

Slide 13:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Bed Bug Reproduction  Female bedbugs can lay up to five eggs in a day and 500 during a lifetime.  The eggs are visible to the naked eye measuring 1 mm in length (approx. 2 grains of salt) and are a milky-white tone in color.  The eggs hatch in one to two weeks. The hatchlings begin feeding immediately. Mating bed bugs flipped over to show traumatic insemination of female by male. Male organ punctures abdominal wall and injects sperm into abdomen. Females can be mated up to 5x per day. They can die from extreme mating (possibly blood loss). Photo: Roger Ignell.

Slide 14:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Bed Bug Nymphs  Newly hatched nymphs are translucent and lighter in color and continue to become browner and molt as they reach maturity.  When it comes to size, they are often compared to poppy seeds. After emerging from the egg, nymphs are about the size of the head of a pin !

Slide 15:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo  Humans! This preference is so strong that they are more likely to travel a good distance to seek humans than feed on a pet that may be more easily accessible.  Women and children are generally more sensitive to bites, although men do get bit.  Two people can even sleep in the same bed, and one person may show no signs of getting bit.  Though it is more likely that both are being bit, but one is more sensitive to the allergen in the bedbugs saliva than the other person. Bedbugs have a food preference.

Slide 18:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Bed Bug Feeding

Slide 19:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Bed Bug Feeding  Bed bugs feed for about five minutes and immediately return to their hiding place.  Should feeding be interrupted then multiple feedings can occur during the night.  It then crawls into hiding, remaining there for several days to digest its meal. When hunger returns, the bug emerges from hiding and seeks another blood meal.

Slide 20:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Feeding Habits  Bedbugs are generally active only at night, with a peak attack period about an hour before dawn.  Given the opportunity, they may attempt to feed at other times of day. Attracted by warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, the bug pierces the skin of its host with two hollow tubes.  With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anticoagulants and anesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host.

Slide 21:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Health Effects?  Although bed bugs and their bites are a nuisance, they are not known to spread disease.  Bites can be very itchy and irritating. Most welts heal in a few days but some may persist for weeks. Usually an anti-itching ointment will help.  The anxiety about being bit can lead to sleeplessness, which can have serious effects on ones well-being.  Some people have become so desperate that they use illegal or excessive amounts of pesticides that can lead to poisonings.

Slide 22:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Where they hide. Survey of 13 apartments; Source: PCT. Battling Bed Bugs in Apartments. Univ. of Kentucky. Potter, Romero, Haynes, Wickenmeyer. Active mainly at night. During daytime they prefer to hide close to where people sleep (over 75% of the hiding places above are associated with the bed in this survey).

Slide 23:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Where they hide.  Heavily used hiding places are evident by black or brown spots of dried blood excrement on the surfaces where the bugs rest.  Usually there is an offensive odor where bed bugs are numerous.  If allowed to multiply, they establish themselves behind baseboards, window and door casings, pictures, and moldings, and in furniture, loosened wallpaper, and cracks in plaster and partitions. Eggs, egg shells, and cast skins may be found near these places.

Slide 24:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Bed Bug Movement  Most of the time, there are no solid barriers between apartments or condos, so plumbing or electrical lines provides direct access to the next unit and conditions they favor,  Once in the wall void, their search is aided by carbon dioxide exhaled by the occupants in an adjoining living area.  The higher the occupancy, the more attractive the new space. Bed bugs are quick! Adults may move more than 4 feet per minute and they may travel up to 100 feet during the night while foraging..

Slide 31:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Treatment Procedures  The greatest track record of success utilize steam treatments or a cryonite treatment to complement their chemical treatments.  Chemical treatments should include: fogging, crack & crevice, as well as, dusting in the proper areas  Treating the insides, underneath and exterior of all furniture and mattresses that are in the infested rooms.  Any decorations that are on the walls may have to be treated.

Slide 32:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo After the steaming and treatment process all mattresses should be covered with approved mattress covers that will stop bed bugs from exiting or entering the mattress. Treatment Procedures

Slide 33:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo  If your bed bug program does not include either steam or cryonite (a freezing method) you may be wasting your money  Either method, when generating a direct contact hit against the bed bug, will kill all stages of the insect including the egg stage  Placing a live bed bug under a sheet of ordinary copy paper and spraying the paper with cryonite will not kill the bed bug, it must be a direct hit  Bed bugs can not survive a steam treatment even without having a direct hit. Steam vs Cryonite

Slide 34:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Preparations are Key to Success REDUCE CLUTTER… NOW IS THE TIME.  All beds must be stripped. All linens must be removed and washed/dried on the highest setting. If you are taking clothes to the laundry, make sure you use new bags after you remove items from dryer.  All clothing should follow the same procedures as linens. Keep clean items sealed in a bag or container until after your treatment. Do not overload dryers.  All dressers, night stands, or any other furniture that the K9 alerts to shall be emptied.  Closets should also be emptied.  VACUUM everything!!  NO OPEN FOOD, DISHES, Plates.  NO PETS!

Slide 35:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Post Service Preparations  After the treatment and the room is clear for re-entry, 2-3 hours, the below steps may be taken.  All floors must be vacuumed every other day for two weeks.  All furniture treated must be vacuumed thoroughly.  All surfaces must be wiped down; i.e. counters, bed side tables, etc.  Windows shall be opened for ventilation.  All mattress/box springs should be covered with mattress/box covers.  You may mop floors, but please stay at least 10" away from all baseboards.

Slide 36:

NJAA’s 21st Annual Conference & Expo Prevention  Your tenants should never bring bed frames, mattresses, box springs, or upholstered furniture found on the street into your complex.  Check all used and rented furniture for bed bugs.  When traveling, inspect the bed and furniture. Keep suitcases off the floor and bed, and inspect them before they leave.  If your tenant suspects that they have been around bed bugs, immediately wash and dry your clothing on hot settings or store it in a sealed plastic bag until treatment.  Property Managers should seal cracks and crevices with caulk, even if you don’t have bed bugs. This will help prevent bed bugs and other pests from entering.
