More than 50% of the members of Council 8851 were involved in the organization and implementation of this project. More than 100 riders participated and over $18,000 was raised for the Katlin Bolton Sunshine Fund, with some of the proceeds also allocated to Council 8851’s other charitable projects. In addition to the funds raised for a worthy cause, the event greatly increased the profile of the Knights of Columbus in the community, and was a rallying point for the Council to re-engage some members who had become inactive. This project was designed to bring the evil of abortion to the public eye in the community. After several years of discussion, Council 3531 had a headstone made in memory of the “Unborn Child” and had it installed in a local cemetery. Over the next few years, the Council plans to enhance the project by adding a bench, flowers and bushes to the area surrounding the site in the cemetery. The headstone now serves as a permanent memorial to unborn children who have been killed by abortion and as a reminder of Pro-Life values to all who see it. Windsor-Essex County has felt a severe impact on its economy and there are many children in need of support. In December 2009, the members of Council 8919 distributed 600 coats to children attending primary schools in both the Catholic and public system. A news conference was held to explain the program, which was covered by several media outlets, increasing awareness of the Knights of Columbus in the Windsor area, and also ensuring that children in need were kept warm with a proper winter coat this year. The “Church” visited all 18 parishes in Thunder Bay and later made the rounds throughout the parishes across the Diocese Thunder Bay, eventually making its way to the Northwestern Regional Conference where a substantial monetary donation was made to the Bishop of the Diocese of Thunder Bay. The Chatham-Kent Epilepsy Support Centre was invited to attend and to raise funds and awareness in the community through this event. Students from Alex’s high school donated baked goods and the Council offered a chili meal with a free will donation at the door. This project involved the organization of a motorcycle ride in aid of Kaitlin Bolton, who suffers from Metachromatic Levkodystrophy and requires treatments that are not covered by OHIP. It is expected to continue to move around the Diocese, raising more funds for seminarians and deacons for the foreseeable future. The function was held to raise funds to support Alex and his family, by offsetting the costs of a 5 week stay in London at University Hospital, where Alex underwent extensive testing for severe epilepsy and to devise a course of treatment for this condition, which he has endured since childhood. The Chatham-Kent Epilepsy Support Centre was invited to attend and to raise funds and awareness in the community through this event. Students from Alex’s high school donated baked goods and the Council offered a chili meal with a free will donation at the door. The entire Taylor family is glad to be back home in Tilbury and is most grateful for the support shown by their “extended family” in the Knights of Columbus and Squires. Congratulations to Msgr. A.J.
