ACKNOWLEDGEMENT : 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I owe my heartiest thanks to my Computer Teacher Ms. M. Khera who gave me innovative ideas and motivated me to learn about Nanotechnology and guided me in doing this project. This project could not have been completed without the guidance and support of my Parents who are also my team members and my little one year brother who shall use the knowledge of nanotechnology in his lifetime. INDEX : 3 INDEX NANOTECHNOLOGY : 4 NANOTECHNOLOGY DEFINATION: Nanotechnology is an umbrella term that is used to describe a variety of techniques to fabricate materials and devices on the nanoscale. One nanometer(nm) is one billionth, or 10-9 of a meter. With 15,342 atoms, this parallel-shaft speed reducer gear is one of the largest nanomechanical devices ever modeled in atomic detail. Nanotechnology : 5 Nanotechnology Nanotechnology cuts across many disciplines, including colloidal Science, chemistry, applied physics and biology.A sheet of paper is about100000 nanometers thick. The width of a human hair is approximately 80000 nanometers thick. NANOTECHNOLOGY : 6 NANOTECHNOLOGY Trillions of dollars of abundance or a vicious scramble to own everything. Rapid invention of wondrous products or weapons development fast enough to destabilize any arms race. Networked computers for everyone in the world or networked cameras so governments can watch our everymove. Scope of Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology : 7 Nanotechnology Tiny nanogears may one day move microscopic machines through the human body in search of disease. Life saving medical robots or untraceable weapons of mass destruction. SELFREPLICATING NANO-ROBOTS NANOTECHNOLOGY : 8 NANOTECHNOLOGY A nanometer-sized particle is also smaller than a living cell and can be seen only with the most powerful Microscopes available today. NANOTECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS USING NANOSCALE MATERIALS : 9 NANOTECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS USING NANOSCALE MATERIALS Bumpers on cars Paints and coatings to protect against corrosion, scratches and radiation Protective and glare-reducing coatings for eyeglasses and cars Metal-cutting tools Sunscreens and cosmetics Lightweight,Stronger Tennis racquets 0 NANOTECHNOLOGY : 10 NANOTECHNOLOGY Longer-lasting tennis balls Dental-bonding agent Burn and wound dressings Ink Automobile catalytic converters. Stain-free clothing and mattresses. New Textile blocks Mustard gas Nanotechsugar golf balls NANOTECHNOLOGY : 11 NANOTECHNOLOGY Some things that become practical with mature Nanotechnology Nearly free consumer products PCs will be billions of times faster then today Safe and affordable space travel Virtual end to illness, aging, death No more pollution and automatic cleanup of existing pollution Picture: NASA NANOTECHNOLOGY : 12 NANOTECHNOLOGY End of famine and starvation Superior education for every child on Earth Reintroduction of many extinct plants and animals NANOTECHNOLOGY : 13 NANOTECHNOLOGY ADVANTAGES OF APPLYING NANOTECHNOLOGY: By applying Nanotechnology, products can be 5 times as strong, 10 times as efficient, and millions of times compact -or better. Products can be designed in days and can be distributed in hours. Products can even be Pre-Designed. NANOTECHNOLOGY : 14 NANOTECHNOLOGY What products will be available in the next few years? solar cells in roofing tiles and siding that will provide electricity for homes and facilities high performance footwear, exercise equipment, and car parts such as belts, wiper blades and seals0 NANOTECHNOLOGY : 15 NANOTECHNOLOGY The pharmaceutical and chemical industries are being affected greatly by nanotechnology, as well. New commercial applications of nanotechnology that are expected within five years in these industries include: advanced drug delivery systems, including implantable devices that automatically administer drugs and sense drug levels, and medical diagnostic tools, such as cancer tagging mechanisms. NANOTECHNOLOGY : 16 NANOTECHNOLOGY An engineered DNA strand between metal atom contacts could function as a molecular electronics device. Such molecules and nanostructures are expected to revolutionize electronics. Understanding the complex quantum physics involved via simulation guides design. For NASA, devices and sensors made from such molecules and nanostructures may be particularly usefule when electrical power is limited. Picture: NASA NANOTECHNOLOGY : 17 NANOTECHNOLOGY Opponents will invoke the precautionary principle and highlight the potential dangers of this new technology, but almost every very useful technology can be used for evil. Industry and government officials must assure to the maximum extent practicable that nanotech products will be appropriately tested, certified and monitored. Moral and ethical caution should be taken with nanotechnology development, particularly related to human research such as cloning and embryonic stem cell research. NANOTECHNOLOGY : 18 NANOTECHNOLOGY While our understanding of Nanotechnology is still crude, the ability to manipulate matter with molecular precision already seems set to eclipse the changes wrought by the information age, changes enabled simply by our ability to manipulate data. Whether the benefits of nanotechnology outweigh the risks will determine the future of what many researchers and investors hope will be the world's next industrial revolution. Meanwhile, most analysts say, society must play an active role in assessing the implications of this burgeoning technology. Slide 19: 19 TOOLS USED AND PROBLEM FACED TOOLS USED Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. Formatting, Bullet and Numbering. Tables, Spell check, Font size Use of Internet material with photographs and examples. PROBLEM FACED Material available was very scattered and diverse. PowerPoint presentation was a new experience and I encountered lot of things which took time to learn.
