Archetypes Definition: “[An] archetype [is] a pattern or model that serves as the basis for different, but related, versions of a character, plot, or theme” Other examples: the outcast, loss of innocence, water Monomyth 1. It’s the most prevalent archetype. 2. The hero’s story has undergone few changes over time. REVIEW AND MORE * “the one story” * Popular name for the hero’s story Why this archetype is important: Two Kinds of Heroes : Two Kinds of Heroes Characteristics of a Mythic Hero 1. Is either male or female 2. Had an unusual birth and/or is a child of a deity and human 3. Possesses human and godlike qualities 4. Shows early signs of being extraordinary Two Kinds of Heroes : Two Kinds of Heroes Characteristics of a Folktale Hero 1. Is an ordinary person 2. Is often disregarded and/or is not taken seriously by his/her family 3. Does not have supernatural powers but has some kind of talent, like intelligence Two Kinds of Heroes : Two Kinds of Heroes Both Mythic and Folktale Heroes 1. They have a calling to be a part of an adventure. 2. Some refuse their calling, which has consequences. 3. Eventually they accept their role as heroes. The Quest : The Quest Definition: “A quest is a journey taken in search of something of value” (27). “Something of value”: Person Abstract concept Personal history Quests may include the following: Aides (friends, deities, people thanking the hero for his good deeds) Temptations Character flaws The Quest Continued : The Quest Continued Quests may include the following: Journey to a frightening, threatening place This is often the final—sometimes fatal—adventure If the hero survives: Returns to society with his new knowledge May receive a reward So What? : So What?
