West Pakistan East Pakistan Mother language : URDU BANGLA was the mother language

In 1948, the government of Pakistan declared that Urdu should be the national language to be followed in administration both in West and East Pakistan. This resulted in strong opposition and agitation against the imposition of Urdu on the majority of the Bengali speaking population of the East Pakistan. The Pakistani government banned agitation and used force to suppress the language agitation from the Bengal people. On 21 February 1952, students of the Dhaka University called for a provincial strike against the imposition of Urdu. As the agitation became stronger, the  Pakistani police brutally fired on the students of the Dhaka University in spite of their peaceful agitation  in which four students- Salam, Rafique, Barkat and Zabbar were killed. Thus, Bengali nation became the first nation in the world who sacrificed their lives in favor of their mother language and the date on which these students became martyrs in fighting for the right to use their mother language is now considered as the International Mother Language Day. :

Those brave hearts Salam , Borkat , Rafique’s sacrifice at once tragic glorious and the indignation of the people against an autocratic government had far reaching effect. 21st February became a symbol and attained mythic properties, it nourished the concepts of democracy and secularism. It also contributed significantly to the flowering of Bangalee nationalism. It led to the dawning of the realization in the minds of the Bangalees that they constituted a separate nation and their destiny lay not with Pakistan but elsewhere as an independent country. The subsequent democratic mass movements of the late fifties, throughout the sixties and the seventies, and finally the struggle for independence and the war of liberation(1971) owed a  great deal to 21st February. :

Finally, the Pakistani government was forced to yield to the popular agitation and Bengali became an official language in Pakistan on 29th February 1956. Following the liberation of Bangla Desh  from Pakistan  in 1971, Bangla Desh became an independent country with Bengali as its official language. :

How we celebrate 21 February ? :

How we celebrate 21 February ? At one minute past midnight on 21 February, the President of Bangladesh arrives at the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the language martyrs. He is followed by the Prime Minister, members of the cabinet, staff of diplomatic missions in Dhaka , political leaders, representatives of various institutions and organizations etc. Throughout the day, people of all ages and from all walks of life visit the Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for Bangla. Walking slowly, they sing the mournful notes of the elegy, 'Amar bhaiyer rakte rangano ekushey february ami ki bhulite pari' (Can I forget 21 February reddened with the blood of my brothers?). Apart from this famous song, many poets have written poems on 21 February. In commemoration of the day, Bangla Academy holds a month-long book fair and organizes literary and cultural events throughout the month.
