A Brief History : A Brief History Founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976 Grew from the Homebrew Computer Club scene Created the Macintosh in 1984 Pioneers of evangelistic marketing What Makes a Mac Different : What Makes a Mac Different Designed with the one-stop shop idea Up until January 2006 Macs used PowerPC processors Which meant that you could only use Mac OS or special versions of Linux That Intel processor speed comparisons were useless That you needed an emulator if you needed to use Windows apps From 1984-2001 Mac OS was a bespoke OS What Makes a Mac the Same : What Makes a Mac the Same Standard parts like DDR2 SDRAM Since 2006 have used standard Intel CPUs Which allows for the native install of Windows and other operating systems Since 2001 Mac OS has been based on Unix It gained the status of a certified UNIX operating system last year Mac uses technologies like Java, C, Apache Has always had apps to allow it to perform the same tasks as a pc running Windows Microsoft and the Mac : Microsoft and the Mac MS PowerPoint and Excel started off on the Mac The original Windows logo was designed on a Mac The multi million dollar mansion owned by Bill Gates was designed on a Mac In 1997 Microsoft invested $150m in Apple Thinking Different - Who buys Macs : Thinking Different - Who buys Macs According to Nielsen/NetRatings Mac users are: 58% more likely to build their own Web page Above-average in terms of household income and education levels More Web savvy, with more than half having been online for at least five years Majority of users working in the creative industries Source: news.com/2100-1040-943519.html Community : Community Like any other such as the Linux community Often accused of being smug “fanboys” Often have an unhealthy addiction to their Macs Often see using a Mac as a bit like the true path to enlightenment Criticisms of the Mac : Criticisms of the Mac Overpriced - Wrong, hardware is aimed at professionals and is designed to last Can’t upgrade - Wrong, RAM and HD are standard No right mouse button - Wrong No Games - Wrong, just not as many plus you could dual boot into Windows It’s only for “hippies” - Wrong, Linus Torvalds owns one Can’t use it in enterprise - Wrong, easily integrates with MS Active Directory Incompatible with Windows - Wrong, files are cross platform and can easily form heterogeneous networks… Do people hate the Mac because they are jealous? : Do people hate the Mac because they are jealous? What’s to be jealous of? An OS specifically designed for that hardware An OS with the power of unix but with award winning easy to use UI No viruses, malware, spyware… Regular predictable OS updates No update Tuesday Ability to install other OS’s Support community… Summary : Summary Modern Macs are almost exactly the same in hardware as generic pc’s Almost everything you can do on a pc you can do on a Mac (and it would be everything if you installed Windows) Mac users have a separate culture to most computer users.
