Bowen Therapy Course #001 Basic Bowen Workshop

Overview :

Overview What Bowen Therapy is and its therapeutic Benefits Brief history of Bowen How Bowen works Why study at Bowen College Bowen Therapy Demonstration Bowen Testimonials Bowen Case Studies

What is Bowen Therapy? :

What is Bowen Therapy? Bowen is a gentle soft tissue bodywork technique, that works on the autonomic nervous system. When applied, it initiates the process of natural auto-regulation throughout the whole body. This auto-regulatory effect results in a rapid elimination or reduction of symptoms, followed by an increase in energy and a sense of well being. Bowen is a holistic therapy and aims to reintegrate the body-mind complex as a whole, it is often called contextual healing, consequently regarding illnesses as symptoms of imbalance. Bowen is a soft tissue osteopathic-style therapy, designed to remove pain, physiological dysfunction and even neurolgical imbalances, by restoring the structural integrity of the body.

Slide 5:

Bowen Therapy allows the body to reset and heal itself. After the system has been rebooted during treatment, it is the body that takes over and does most of the healing. Its application is suitable and safe for all ages, from new-born to the elderly. It is for this reason that there are no general contraindications, essentially rendering the technique useful for a wide range of conditions from acute pain to chronic conditions. " The art of Bowen is evident in its skilful application, comprehensive understanding of the body’s path to healing, and the integrity and intuitive mindfulness of its therapists. " ~ Dr. Manon Bolliger, ND

Discovery of theBowen Technique :

Discovery of theBowen Technique The Bowen technique was brought to the forefront when a survey on alternative therapies conducted by the Australian government in 1975 revealed that a Tom Bowen was treating approximately 13,000 patients per year. His clients reported remarkable outcomes and achieved these results with only two or three sessions per client. In the end, an inquiry that initially appeared as a threat to his practice became a major promotion of Bowen Therapy.

Thomas A. Bowen :

Thomas A. Bowen 1916 -1982

Tom Bowen’s Students :

Tom Bowen’s Students Over the years, Tom Bowen agreed to train only a half dozen students. Among these students who trained with Tom Bowen were: Oswald Rentsch, massage therapist who spent 2 years with Tom Bowen Keith Davis, chiropractor , spent 7 years Nigel Love, chiropractor, at end of era Kevin Neave, chiropractor, spent 4 or 5 years Romney Smeeton, chiropractor, spent 5 years, at end of era Kevin Ryan, Osteopath, spent 2 years, at end of era

The Treatment :

The Treatment The treatment itself, consists of a series of gentle moves on skin (or through light clothing), with the client usually lying on a treatment table. A session normally lasts from half an hour to an hour and frequently results in a deep sense of overall relaxation despite the severity of pain the patient presents with.

Treatment Protocol :

Treatment Protocol There are pauses that give the body time to incorporate the information . The moves themselves require a great sense of tissue tension recognition and thus are light, gentle and very precise. 2-to-5 Treatments is the average number of treatments necessary before seeing maximal results.

Slide 13:

Contact Slack Challenge Roll Pause The Bowen Move

The “Challenge” in Bowen :

The “Challenge” in Bowen The Bowen moves are performed so that the therapists engages the lateral aspect of the belly of the muscle and maintains pressure as close to possible to the stretch reflex point without activating the stretch reflex. You experience the muscle “giving, swelling” just before you allow your fingers to gently move the slacked skin over it. Any perceived tensing of the muscle defeats the purpose. The pressure must be just right, not too heavy as to “squash” the muscle, but with enough muscle contact so as to stimulate motor sensory neurons in muscle tissue to achieve muscle relaxation, through the modification of sensory motor neurons sensitivity to muscle spindle stretch. This is achieved by what we call “challenge of the muscle belly” with “eye-ball” pressure, not deep enough to activate the stretch-reflex mechanism which would otherwise cause an automatic muscle contraction and further irritate the muscle.

Bowen Restores Parasympathetic Function :

Bowen Restores Parasympathetic Function Bowen Therapy can directly relieve these symptoms through reducing sympathetically maintained muscle contraction. Spasm and inflammation - “healthy/Normal” immediate responses to an injury, often remain long after and become the problem. The parasympathetic portion is reciprocally restored, increasing blood and lymph flow, feeding undernourished tissue and reducing inflammation. People can feel shifts in their bodies during and after Bowen sessions while the autonomic system comes back into balance.

Bowen RestoresStructural Integrity :

Bowen RestoresStructural Integrity The Objective in Bowen is to remove held patterns of pain and physiological dysfunctions by restoring the structural integrity of the body. Bowen is a process that enables self regulation. Pain is the result not only of an original cause but of the many defensive posturing the body takes to compensate for the original injury. The key is to untangle this pain web of compensatory feedback loops.

Mechanism of Action :

Mechanism of Action When Tom Bowen developed the system of healing later termed Bowen Therapy, he placed emphasis on the work and its effects. As a result, the mechanism through which Bowen moves stimulate the body to heal is still in its infancy. During the past few decades, more thought and research has gone into how Bowen Therapy achieves its remarkable effects. Some of the theories include: Stimulation and rebalancing of the Autonomic Nervous System Interference with neuromuscular pain loops Stimulation of energetic currents in the body Vibrational tuning of the body's energy Joint proprioceptors, spindle cells, Golgi tendon organ, Neurolymphatic points and lymphatic circulation Affects on the fascia through cell receptors Correlation of many points with TCM and Meridian lines Correlation with Marma points (Ayurvedic medicine)

What is Bowen College’s approach? :

What is Bowen College’s approach? Bowen College prepares its students to understand the mechanism of healing and compensations that are at play so as to guide the student to a deeper understanding of how to benefit their patient The program is the only one designed to teach the required science and the application of the philosophy of healing. Students receive a solid grounding in TCM principles, fascia physiology . Current research in the field, nutrition and the mindful application of these skills.

Testimonials - Doctors :

Testimonials - Doctors I was facing a hip replacement and back surgery when I discovered the Bowen Technique. After receiving Bowen treatments, not only was I able to walk, but I went back to playing golf... without surgery. I was so impressed that I flew to Australia to train in the Bowen Technique and now treat patients with ailments ranging from bunions to heart disease. - Dr. JoAnne Whitaker, M.D. I consider the Bowen Technique to be a blessing in my practice because of its simplicity, results and patient satisfaction. It has nearly eliminated my need to use cortisone injections. - Audrey Butko M.D. Clients who present with both acute and chronic pain, having often sought treatment in vain from a variety of other experts and specialists, are consistently free of their problems within a very short time by using Bowen. In fact, most clients require only 2 or 3 sessions to achieve long term benefits. - Dr. Michael Buckmann

Testimonials - Doctors :

The Bowen Technique is one of the most powerful physical medicine techniques I have learned in 24 years as a podiatrist. I routinely use the Bowen Technique to complement treatment of various foot and ankle injuries. - Mitchell R. Mosher, DPM I offer the Bowen Technique to acute and chronic patients who have not responded to traditional treatment for myofascial pain syndrome, back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis or fractures. Although skeptical at first, C.S. Whitman, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, now regularly refers patients to Dr. Townsend's program. - Gerry Townsend, M.D. I have noted improvement in stress-related muscle pain and tension, joint pain and posture. Bowen Therapy sessions may benefit people with musculo-skeletal pain as well as other stress related symptoms. Much to my surprise, my neck pain got resolved through this work. I am very pleased with the results and quite amazed! - J. T., M.D., Physician, Medical Researcher, Biotechnology Testimonials - Doctors

This body work has been enormously beneficial in allowing me to feel freer, less constricted, more mobile and better aligned. I highly recommend Bowen Therapy. - L. White. MD, Physician, former Professor of Cardiology After over 30 years of medical practice, I am finding the Bowen Technique the most effective and efficient hands-on procedure I’ve ever studied. I fully recommend this technique to all health practitioners. - Dr Robert Flemming MD Of all the modalities I have used, Bowen Therapy has helped so many of my patients that I would never want to give it up. - Dr. Ted Sleigh Testimonials - Doctors

Testimonials - Doctors :

As a board-certified family physician with a special interest in the treatment of chronic illness and pain syndromes, I am thrilled to have Bowen Therapy as a resource for myself, family, friends and patients. - Dr. Christine Staub Two chronic problems cleared up after a few Bowen sessions three months ago. As far back as I can remember, I tended toward constipation. After eighty-five years of laxatives, enemas, and suppositories, I’m now regular — even without Metamucil. My sinus condition began in the early 1950s. After the doctor’s initial treatments with iodine, I irrigated my sinuses with saline solution for about ten years, then used Neosynephrine for thirty years, and finally used Nasacor daily for ten years. Since the Bowen, my sinuses are clear without any medication. - Oscar C. Weitzberg, Rockville, MD I have been able to notice results with Bowen even in chronic situations such as rheumatism, TMJ, chronic asthma and emotional depression. - Dr. Fred Menier Testimonials - Doctors

Testimonials - Patients :

Testimonials - Patients Today is the first day in two years that I haven't been in pain. I injured my shoulder two years ago and have tried a number of different therapies. Through a dear friend I was recommended to Bowen. I was warned that it would feel as if they weren't doing anything. That was a bit misleading. It felt like a brief, but very relaxing massage. I felt refreshed and a bit looser after my first treatment. Then three days later I realized that the pain in my shoulder had diminished significantly. I've done only two more treatments since and with each day the range of motion increases. Today I noticed that under normal load and activity I had very little discomfort and no pain. I would say to anyone who has given up on finding relief, don't quit yet. Try Bowen. - John Marshall Jones

Testimonials - Patients :

After 8 years of suffering (Right Thoracic Left Lumber Scoliosis) and trying various therapies like acupuncture, chiropractic treatments, massage therapy , pressure point and even traction, I thought I would have to live the rest of my life in pain. One day while visiting my mom she gave me an article from the "Vancouver Sun" about how Bowen therapy has helped many people who have not had any success with other types of physiotherapy. I decided to try Bowen therapy and it has changed my life drastically. Before Bowen therapy my life consisted of going to work coming home and icing my spine down so that I was able to go to work the next day. After a few treatments my life started to change for the better , I was able to go for walks without any pain in my lower back and the pain in my rib cage was almost all gone. Two years later and with only 6 treatments over the period, I am now able to go for 2 hour walks and do 1 hour of hard cardio in the gym on my days off. This is all thanks to Bowen therapy. - M. Bernard Testimonials - Patients

Slide 36:

I write this to you, to thank you for the Bowen treatment you gave me after my accident with a motorbike. As you perhaps remember I had to wear a metal support at my wrist, because of the pain and weakness in my hand. You perhaps also remember that because of the blow to my head, I was ‘walking besides my self’ and had terrible headache. My pain and illness disappeared immediately just after your gentle treatment. And I didn’t have to wear my metal support from that minute, and haven’t been wearing it since. At the same time it took the top of my migraine attacks, which I of cause, first discovered later. I have tried a lot of different treatments during the last 30 years, but never a treatment like this!! It was so gentle and absolutely painless and there was absolutely no side effects what so ever. I felt very secure under the treatment, and that was surely because of your many years of experience and many years in the business. It is truly a treatment I will recommend to many people in the future. - Erik Schou Testimonials - Patients

Slide 37:

After a Bowen treatment, I feel like you are actually changing my DNA. - Edie Pett, ND and Chiropractor After 20 years of visiting my chiropractor, I was at my wits’ end. After three Bowen treatments, my chronic back pain is completely gone - Fay Gordon I had a car accident, my car was totalled, I was badly shaken up plus having a broken wrist. I had the treatments recommended by the insurance company and was not improving. After several weeks I finally went for the Bowen treatment which fixed my back and shoulders without any more difficulty. I have also had the Bowen treatment for other problems, respiratory, neck and shoulders. I find it is the most effective treatment for these type of problems and recommend the treatment very highly. I have recommended the Bowen treatment to a lot of people and they are so pleased to get the results they are looking for. - Lois Percy Testimonials - Patients

Slide 38:

For the last three years, I’ve had chronic pain in my right knee that was at times so bad I had to lift my leg up with my hand to get into my car. Five days after the fourth Bowen treatment with Dr. Manon, the pain is 90 per cent better. It’s like a miracle. I’ve also had numbness in both my feet, which has improved, and I look forward to further improvement as my treatment continues. - Ken Kollman I had a car accident, my car was totalled, I was badly shaken up plus having a broken wrist.
