In the U.S.A….. graduate from an accredited OTA program and receive an Associates Degree (2 yrs.) as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) : National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Canada’s OT and PT professions may look to the U.S.A. for future trends and roles of the OTA & PTA. The Aging Population Due to the rapid advancement in rehabilitation and therapeutic techniques, and in medical science and technology individual’s are living longer resulting in an increase in the aged population. The Aging Population : 2. The Aging Population This increase in the aged population may eventually translate into an increased need for more therapists and OTA & PTA’s. Niagara Health System Changing Environment : Niagara Health System Changing Environment Based upon the NHS initiative information for Mental Health (Newsletter Building Healthcare for Today and Tomorrow, Its Our Time Project, Vol. 1, Issue 1, Apr. 07) approximately 2000 patients are admitted into Mental Health services at the NHS each year. At present, there are a total of 60 inpatient beds with 18 000 outpatient clinic visits each year. Currently, mental health patients requiring specialized inpatient or ambulatory care must access programs in Hamilton, London or Toronto.
