A RANGE OF APPROACHES TO TEACHING EXIST in countries where 8th grade students’ achievement was high. The most significant difference between the U.S. and the high-achieving countries was the LEVEL OF ENGAGAEMENT of students in active struggle with core mathematics concepts and procedures. Conclusions: What Mathematics Teachers Must Do : Conclusions: What Mathematics Teachers Must Do Learn a VARIETY OF INSTRUCTIONAL STATEGIES that attend to key mathematical relationships and ENGAGE STUDENTS in mathematical work.
