Conclusions: TIMMS 1999 Video Study : 

Conclusions: TIMMS 1999 Video Study Teaching of mathematics has NOT IMPROVED. A RANGE OF APPROACHES TO TEACHING EXIST in countries where 8th grade students’ achievement was high. The most significant difference between the U.S. and the high-achieving countries was the LEVEL OF ENGAGAEMENT of students in active struggle with core mathematics concepts and procedures.

Conclusions: What Mathematics Teachers Must Do Learn a VARIETY OF INSTRUCTIONAL STATEGIES that attend to key mathematical relationships and ENGAGE STUDENTS in mathematical work. Learn to MONITOR what students are experiencing, thinking, and learning during a lesson and be able to constantly READJUST STRATEGIES in order to capitalize on every opportunity for students to learn. Seek PD LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES that are TIED TO THE CURRICULUM YOU ARE TEACHING.
