Interest Locus of Control : Locus of Control What is Locus of Control? According to Philip Zimbardo (a famous psychologist), "A locus of control orientation is a belief about whether the outcomes of our actions are contingent on what we do (internal control orientation) or on events outside our personal control (external control orientation)." (Zimbardo, 1985) The concept was developed by Julian Rotter in the 1960 Locus of Control : Locus of Control External Locus of Control Individual believes that his/her behavior is guided by fate, luck, or other external circumstances Internal Locus of Control Individual believes that his/her behavior is guided by his/her personal decisions and efforts. Thus, Locus of control can be understood as bipolar construct, ranging from external causes to internal causes Shift from External to Internal : Shift from External to Internal external OR internal expectations to evaluate yourself do what others want to do most of the time seek approval so much that it is a “must” Do you try to impress others you worry about being "popular" and pleasing everyone Shift from External to Internal : Shift from External to Internal you frequently want to do the opposite of what others want you to do you often let others make decisions for you you let others take care of you you worry about taking care of others' needs or feelings more than you take care of your own constantly "should" all over yourself OR do what you "want" to do Myths about Self : Myths about Self I must please every one My value as a person depends on what others think of me If I fail in a task I am a failure To be a good person, I must help all those who seek my help It is wrong to express anger I’d be considered weak if I express soft feelings to / in front of others Self Improvement : Self Improvement Change your self-talk Model the person you want to be Try avoid being pessimistic or hang around negative people Do not accept put downs by other people Acknowledge compliments & feel good Set & work to accomplish achievable goals Find a mentor Avoid comparison with others Practice acts of kindness for others & feel good about yourself Take action to improve your self-image Slide 27: THANK YOU You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
