Hanyu is made up of two Chinese words , ‘Han’ – a tribal group in China, and ‘yu’ -- the word for the Chinese language. Pinyin means “joining sounds together”. Pinyin is used to denote pronunciation of characters. It is also an efficient input method in Chinese computer software, supported by Microsoft Windows OS. Hanyu Pinyin is a system of using roman characters (alphabets) to form each syllable. Syllables are made up of Initials (consonants) + Finals ( vowels) + tone marks. There are two ways of showing tone marks that signify the pitch of a Chinese character. Example 2 (used in MS IME): tan1 ? = beach tan2 ? = converse tan3 ? = frank tan4 ? = visit tan ? = greed Although hanyu pinyin utilizes an alphabet, its Roman lettering is not pronounced according to typical English conventions. One must learn the letters and their unique associated sounds in pinyin before using the system to notate the Chinese sounds. Example 1: ma ? ?- 1st tone = mother má ? ?- 2nd tone = torpid ma ? ?- 3rd tone = horse mà ? ?- 4th tone = scold ma ? ? - neutral tone = question participle Tips for Pinyin: : Tips for Pinyin: As mentioned earlier, Mandarin Chinese syllables are written as an “initial or front sound” + a “final or end sound” + tone marks Initial sounds must be soft and brief, where final sounds must be pronounced in a heavy and clear accent. Example: m------- a ------? ma ma - 1st tone ? = high level má - 2nd tone ? = high rising ma - 3rd tone ? = low falling-rising mà - 4th tone ? = high falling ma - neutral tone ? = even Why Choose The Byki – CAI Progam? : Why Choose The Byki – CAI Progam? Byki stands for Before You Know It; it is an exciting Computer Assisted Instruction program from Transparent Language, Inc. that is designed to provide a fun, engaging, and effective environment for those interested in learning a new language. Although acquiring a Chinese vocabulary using ‘Hanyu Pinyin’ can be a real challenge, the Byki program makes it easy, and not boring. The program has a powerful Leitner flashcard system utilizing a spaced repetition system that has many unique features. Byki comes with its own ListCentral, where one may import a list base regarding the category of learning interest. Learners may also create their own lists, or import any lists that they would like to use from the online chat community site. Byki allows them to work with personally chosen materials in order to learn at their own pace. The Byki chat system can be used to introduce users to other excellent internet resources. Benefits of The Leitner System: : Benefits of The Leitner System: It ensures that you review all the information that you have learned. Reviewing material at increasingly longer intervals will stimulate long term memory. The difficult flashcards tend to be reviewed more often, where those that you know already will not recur. This prevents boredom from setting in by continually challenging learners. “In the Leitner system, flashcards are sorted into groups according to how well you know each one in the Leitner's learning box. This is how it works: you try to recall the solution written on a flashcard. If you succeed, you send the card to the next group. But if you fail, you send it back to the first group. Each succeeding group has a longer period of time before you are required to revisit the cards.” -- Source: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leitner_system) What Is The Leitner System? This will ensure mastery of the material. I’ve set myself up as a user so that the program can keep track of my lists and scores. A very helpful Byki Help bar on the menu bar of the ‘Learn’ screen. Byki program guides are sent to users via email to provide tips on learning. The Chinese, Japanese, and Korean IMEs will most likely be on your Windows discs. If your computer came with Windows installed and you do not have a Windows disc, the files for installing the IMEs may be included on your hard drive. Note: You must be logged in to the system as an administrator to complete this installation. Most individual users automatically have administrator privileges on their own computers, but if you are using Byki on a work computer or in a lab, you may need to ask the administrator for that computer to perform this installation for you. To install the Asian IME on Windows XP: If you have a Windows XP disc, put it in the drive. Choose Start / Control Panel or Start / Settings / Control Panel (depending on how you have your Start menu configured). Double-click on Regional and Language Options. Click on the Languages tab. In the Supplemental Language Support section, mark the Install files for East Asian Languages checkbox. Click OK. Windows will begin copying the files off your disc. If you do not have a disc and Windows does not automatically find the files on your hard drive, you may be asked to locate them. When the installation is complete, you will be asked to restart your computer. You must restart the computer for the IME to work properly. After you have restarted the computer, open Byki and confirm that you can now type in the appropriate language. See Typing Asian Characters for links to the appropriate typing instructions. See: http://www.Chineselearner.com/pinyin/pinyinchart.htm This free online resource is very well set up in its Hanyu Pinyin, with an audio file for the pronunciation of each alphabet (as well as its combinations). I depend upon these pronunciations for drills in my own Hanyu Pinyin learning. I then use the Byki flashcard system to evaluate and reinforce what I have learned and am able to recall and apply. Finally, I am able to use the IME in conjunction with my computer keyboard to type out the simplified Chinese characters. The Hanyu Pinyin Learning Process: My Achievements: : My Achievements: Using the Byki program in conjunction with many other suggested internet resources, I am able to: Match roman characters to old tradition phonetics (i.e.: zhuyin ?? or ‘bopomofo’) which I learned in high school twenty years ago; my recollection of zhuyin is very vague. Pronounce words in Hanyu Pinyin. Transliterate simplified Chinese characters using the roman alphabet (hanyu pinyin) using Microsoft IME. Write e-mails to my friends using simplified Chinese characters. Download Chinese newspapers onto my computer to read. Download mp3 audio files with the lyrics in Chinese pinyin – I can now learn to sing in Mandarin! Read Chinese books with Pinyin marked, learn Chinese characters by looking in the dictionary, It will take my Chinese language study to a higher level. I have summarised what my learning through Byki and many other resources to showcase my newly acquired skills in the following slides. List of Shengmu: 21 ??? Limitations & RecommendationsFor Learning Mandarin With Pinyin : Limitations & RecommendationsFor Learning Mandarin With Pinyin Do not have unrealistic expectations about learning mandarin by Pinyin. LIMITATIONS: Though pinyin is convenient, it simply cannot replace all the Chinese characters; There are just too many Chinese words sharing the same sounds. The initials and finals make up a combination of about 420 sounds, but this is not sufficient. Thus, using pinyin as the main tool for written communication will cause too much confusion and is impractical. RECOMMENDATION: Along the way of learning new words or a new vocabulary with pinyin, always take the time to look at the other associated characters. Because the power of subliminal learning is so strong, one may not be able to memorize the characters immediately, but will be pleasantly surprised by how the little extra effort in taking a quick good look at the associated Chinese characters will pay off in the long-run.
