Setting the Scene Catharine Beecher had the spirit of reform in her blood She overcame personal tragedy and dedicated her life to teaching, writing and helping She will be one of many to examine the role of woman in this new industrialized age

Why give women rights? : 

Why give women rights? Many reformers felt women were central to the success of a strong, democratic nation As industrialization and urbanization took hold of the United States poorer women took jobs in the factories Middle class and wealthy women were freed from chores such as growing their own food

Stay where you belong! : 

Stay where you belong! Most people felt that women should remain in the home The nickname given to the idea of stay at home women was ‘Cult of Domesticity,” or “Cult of True Womanhood.” Many would be shocked to see women in politics, law, and public speaking

How can you stop me? : 

How can you stop me? Even though women tried to defy these ideals the law prevented them Federal and state laws did not give women the right to vote Married women could not own property or make a will Women were typically not allowed to keep the money they earned!

What was accepted? : 

What was accepted? A job that was accepted for women was teaching Seen as an extension of motherhood Participation in reform movements gave women a taste of the world outside the home Many women (especially in the North) became more conscious of their inferior position in society

You Gotta Fight, For Your Right! Antislavery movement was the primary means women entered the public world of politics They saw parallels between the plight of the African American and women

Some famous ladies Sojourner Truth dictated her life experiences Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin Harriet Tubman wrote a detailed description of the Underground Railroad

Men’s Opinion : 

Men’s Opinion Most men were outraged by the reform movement Many felt they should remain in the house and teach children, take care of the husband and entertain What do you think about that?

The Seneca Falls Convention : 

The Seneca Falls Convention First women’s rights convention in United States history Elizabeth Cady Stanton presented a Declaration of Sentiments which echoed the language of the Declaration of Independence

Results of the Convention : 

Results of the Convention Pass 12 resolutions passed by 68 women and 32 men Protested the lack of legal and political rights The 9th resolution called for suffrage, or the right to vote sparked the most controversy

Change Immediately? : 

Change Immediately? The Convention did not cause an avalanche of support Many still felt that women should influence indirectly through work at home It did mark the beginning of the organized women’s rights movement in the United States Think about how you would feel………
