Buddhism : 

Buddhism A religion founded in India by Siddhartha Gautama. Buddhism teaches that the most important thing in life is to reach peace by ending suffering.

Siddhartha Gautama : 

Siddhartha Gautama Grew up a prince in a royal family. His mother had a dream that told her that her son must avoid any kind of suffering. If he saw suffering he would leave his home and become a monk.

Siddhartha Gautama : 

Siddhartha Gautama His father wanted him to be the next king and not become a monk. His family protected him from seeing suffering and lavished him with good things.

Siddhartha Gautama : 

Siddhartha Gautama One that prince was riding in the royal gardens and spotted an elderly man who was suffering. He was overcome with a desire to end suffering. He gave up everything he had and chose to become a monk.

Monk : 

Monk A monk is a man who devotes his life to a religious group.

Siddhartha Gautama : 

Siddhartha Gautama After six years of searching for the truth Buddhist believe that Siddhartha came to an understanding. The wisdom he received that day would later earn him the title the Buddha.

Hinduism vs. Buddhism : 

Hinduism vs. Buddhism Similarities: Founded in India Reincarnation Karma Differences Buddhism does not believe that one powerful force connects all of life. Buddha believed that the most important thing was to reach peace by ending suffering.

Karma : 

Karma A force caused by a person’s good and bad acts. Karma is said to affect future lives.

Reincarnation : 

Reincarnation A belief that people move in a constant cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Four Noble Truths : 

Four Noble Truths In Buddhism, the principles that rule life and promise an end to suffering.

Four Noble Truths : 

Four Noble Truths Life is filled with suffering. Suffering is caused by people’s wants. People may want more pleasure, more power, or a longer life. Suffering can be ended if people stop wanting things. To stop wanting things, people must follow eight basic laws.

Eightfold Path : 

Eightfold Path In Buddhism, the basic rules of behavior and belief leading to an end of suffering. Right view Right intention Right speech Right action Right livelihood Right effort Right mindfulness Right concentration

Middle Way : 

Middle Way A way of life neither too strict nor too easy, that results from following the Eightfold Path.
