United We Rock! The Geator Goes Gold! In 2010, USA (Philadelphia) disc jockey Jerry Blavat, The Geator with the Heator, will celebrate 50 years of broadcasting! He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has received many other honors. Jerry can be seen on PBS’ doo wop specials. In many ways, Jerry epitomizes what our Association is all about – promoting and preserving the Golden Age of Rock & Roll. He is a bona fide “golden oldie, ”… in the bestsense of the phrase. Congratulations, Jerry. To quote your sign-off: “Keep on rockin’, because you only rock once!” For more information on The Geator and to hear some of his programs, see the December 2009 issue ofRockInfo and/or go to www.geator.net. Who is the intrepid but misguided soul? He’s none other than Our Fearless (in most cases) Leader, aka the:Dilly from PhillyJersey JitterbugBoogie Woogie ManWizard of OzgaDaddy OThe product of a misspent youth, arrested development, and questionable priorities, he is trying to preserve and promotethe Golden Age of R&R but he needs your help. Join the association and cruise with us. It should be a fun ride! What was the motivation for creating the Association?“I couldn’t hold an honest job for any appreciable length of time,so I thought I’d see where a labor of love would take me. Finger Poppin’ Time: Playlist #2 Jewish Rock Roll Dovells Tokens Roommates Concords Excellents Reparata & Doo Runs Joel Katz Jay & Americans Shangri Las Music from the Golden Age ofRock & Roll (1950-1969) or music recorded later with that Golden Age sound Soul, Doo-Wop, R&B (BeachMusic), Motown, Rockabilly,Pop, and Cajun/Zydeco Emphasis on the B sides of 45s,LP-only tracks, limited releases and, before the advent of CDs, tunes that were never released on vinyl. Some of your favorites, someyou haven’t heard for awhile, and some you may have missed along the way. United We Rock! Most R&B and R8R singers tend to be African Americans, and to a lesser extent, Italian-Americans, especially doo-wop groups. Jewish Americans were mostly the writers, producers, promoters, etc. However, there were several Jewish-American performers who charted during the Golden Age, including those featured in this medley, -- all of whom hailed from the NYC area, with the exception of Philly’s Dovells.

It’s Rock for the Ages. So brothers and sisters, let us rock! United We Rock! Ritchie Valens (born Ricardo Valenzuela) was one of the first Latino R&R performers. But very few Latino performers followed in the late 1950s and early-mid 1960s. Notable exceptions are featured here with two tracks each, including the Headhunters’ remake of Chris Kenner’s Land of 1000 Dances and the Sunglows’ version of Little Willie John’s Talk to Me.
