FASHION CAPITALS : 

A Fashion Capital is a location which is influential in fashion and in which fashion is important. A fashion capital would be the home of many top designers, modelling agencies, and the other fields in the industry. Fashion centres develop because of concentrations of resources, supplies, skilled labour, and creativity. All designers are influenced by what other designers and artists are creating. New York produces fashion for Everywoman – straightforward, sensible, businesslike, and increasingly stylish. American fashion blossomed during the war years, when communications to Paris were cut off. Since then, an American style, especially for sportswear, is increasingly appreciated worldwide. New York became the American garment centre because supplies and skilled labour were concentrated there. At least two – thirds of American fashion manufacturing headquarters, the major markets, and apparel showrooms. NEW YORK

NEW YORK New York City has been recognized as a top fashion capital known for their chic street and business wears and its designers. The city is known for good entertainments in musicals, interesting tour sites and various museums. New York City is known for a big cosmopolitan population, liberalism, and business central world wide. The busy and cosmopolitan society brought the qualities of the city to make it as a fashion capital. The city has produced many great designers, mostly known for the street and daily wears. Two of the most famous designers from New York are Donna Karen for DKNY and Calvin Klein. Their fashion houses became world wide famous for their chic casual and formal wears for all the people. THE 7TH AVENUE GARMENT DISTRICT : 

Most fashion originates in the vicinity of Seventh Avenue on Manhattan Island in the New York City. Seventh Avenue gives its name to the whole garment district, which is bound by 34th and 40th streets and 6th and 9th Avenues. Crowed into this area are over 2500 manufacturers and contractors. In New York city, there are estimated 4500 factories located primarily in Chinatown, Manhattan and Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The garment industry employs approximately 95,000 people and is still the largest manufacturing industry in the New York City. THE 7TH AVENUE GARMENT DISTRICT Many buildings in the garment district are known for certain apparel specialties. For example. 550 Seventh Avenue has traditionally housed high - fashion companies, one on each floor. Seventh Avenue is anything but glamorous . It is a conglomeration of old, run – down buildings. The streets are filled with trash; jammed with trucks and taxicabs; young men speaking foreign tongues push rags of fabrics or clothing from suppliers to manufacturers; sales representatives pull suitcase on wheels; and the homeless congregate on the side walks.

Inside, design studios, showrooms, and offices crowd each building on every block. There is a sharp contrast between the plush showroom in front for the outside world to see and the cluttered design rooms in back. DKNYDONNA KARAN NEW YORK Donna Karan was born in New York to parents in the “rag trade,” she left Parsons to become Anne Klein’s assistant. After Anne Klein’s death in 1974’ Karan became head designer with Louis Dell ’ Olio. This was the 1st time that an American fashion company was able to continue successfully without the original designer. In 1985, Tomio Taki offered to back Karan in her business featuring luxury sportswear. Her bridge collection called DKNY (Donny Karan New York) has been extremely successful

CALVIN KLEIN : 

Calvin Klein founded the Calvin Klein Inc. in 1968 and emerged drastically as the top classic American designer. The most famous branch of the incorporation of the Calvin Klein house is the Calvin Klein Collection, where its headquarters are located in New York City. They design for women and men’s wears in all different areas; from casual, daily wears to formal, dressy wears. LOUIS DELL' OLIO : 

Born in New York city in 1948, Dell O’ Olio attended Parsons School of Design with Donna Karan. After spending a summer working for Norman Norell, he became an assistant at Teal Traina and later sportswear designer for Originals. He joined Anne Klein in 1974, as co designer until 1985 and then sole designer until 1993. LOUIS DELL' OLIO

RALPH LAUREN : 

The perfect example of a designer who was able to build an empire on a lifestyle, Lauren was born in New York City in 1940 and began his career as a salesclerk at Brooks Brothers. In 1967 he started to design ties and by 1968 had established Polo men’s wear with backing from Norman Hilton. The Polo name is perfect for his classic Ivy League look in expensive fabrics. Lauren built the rest of his multimillion – dollar business on licenses of his women’s wear, a less expensive men’s wear collection called Chaps, boys’ wear, girls’ wear, accessories, and home furnishings. In 1986he opened a $14 million retail store on Madison Avenue and has Polo shops in stores across the country. RALPH LAUREN

NICOLE MILLER : 

Born in Texas in 1951, but raised in Massachusetts, Miller studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and in Paris. In 1982, she opened her women’s wear collection with partner Bud Konheim. What began as a way of getting rid of excess fabric turned into a huge additional business of whimsical men’s ties, shirts, and boxer shorts in witty prints. She now has Nicole Miller boutiques in Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Spain, and Korea. NICOLE MILLER

OSCAR DE LA RENTA : 

Born in 1933 in the Dominican Republic, de la Renta studied painting, sketched for Balenciaga in Madrid, and afterwards became assistant to Castillo at Lanvin. In 1962, he designed for Elizabeth Arden in New York and in 1965 became partner at Jane Derby where he took over the business in 1966. His work, which enjoys a reputation for elegance, includes evening wear, suits and dresses, sportswear, men’s wear, accessories, and expensive Miss O collection. ISAAC MIZRAHI : 

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 14, 1961, Mizrahi studied at Parsons and apprenticed with Perry Ellis. He opened his own women’s wear business in 1987 with partner Sarah Haddad – Cheney and added a men’s wear in 1990. Mizrahi also likes to design costumes for the ballet and films. In 1992, he won his 3rd Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Designer of the Year Award. ISAAC MIZRAHI

RICHARD TYLER : 

A native of Australia and based in Los Angeles, Tyler first developed his design reputation with men’s wear and then added women’s wear. He is well known for his meticulous tailoring and Hollywood clientele. After a successful showing of his collection in New York, he was suddenly projected into the fashion limelight when he was chosen as design director for Anne Klein and Co. in New York. BILL BLASS : 

Born in Indiana in 1922, Bill Blass worked as a sketcher for David Crystal in the 1940s. He worked as designer for Maurice Rentner, later became a partner, and then in 1968, bought out the business. To his women’s day and evening collection’s he has added Blassport sportswear and men’s wear. With 30 domestic and 70 international licenses, Blass has had the longest continuing success of any American designer. BILL BLASS
