Spain is a democracy organized in the form of a parliamentary government under a constitutional monarchy. Interesting facts about the nation : Interesting facts about the nation -Spanish architecture refers to architecture carried out during any era in what is now modern-day Spain, and by Spanish architects worldwide. The Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao -Artists from Spain have been highly influential in the development of various European artistic movements. The Changes the host city suffered for the Olympic Games : The Changes the host city suffered for the Olympic Games The celebration of the 1992 Olympic Games had an enormous impact on the urbanism and external projection of the city of Barcelona. The Games enabled billionaire inversions in infrastructures that are considered to have improved the quality of life and attraction of the city for investments and tourism, making Barcelona become one of the most visited cities in Europe after London, Paris and Rome. Slide 7: The nomination of the city as organizer was the spark that led to the application of a previously elaborated ambitious urban plan. Barcelona was opened to the sea with the construction of the Olympic Village and Olympic Port in Poblenou, a decayed neighbourhood. Various new centres were created, and modern sports facilities were built in the Olympic zones of Montjuïc, Diagonal, and Vall d'Hebron. The construction of ring roads around the city helped reduce the density of the traffic, and El Prat airport was modernized and expanded as two new terminals were opened. New hotels were built and some old ones were refurbished. Curiosities : Curiosities The list of sports expanded to include badminton, baseball, and women’s judo. The Barcelona Games were characterized by an increasing presence of professional athletes in Olympic competition. Slide 13: The Opening Ceremony on 3 September in the Montjuic Olympic Stadium was attended by 65,000 spectators and watched by millions of television viewers. Almost 90 delegations took part in the parade. Support was reinforced by the presence of Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, and Mayor Pasquel Maragall, who was highly supportive of the Paralympic Games. The closing ceremonie : The closing ceremonie The Closing Ceremony on 14 September in the Olympic Stadium brought a spectacular end to one of the finest Games in the history of the Paralympics. The flame is extinguished from the Olympic Cauldron of the Montjuic Stadium (Lluis Companys). The olympic mascot Cobi has already departed in his magic boat to a new journey to discover new adventures. But it’s not time for crying… The carnaval has started and the gypsy fire and spirit has invaded the stadium. This is one of the most incredible parts of the Closing Ceremonies of the XXV Summer Olympic Games. Los Comediants group is in charge of the spectacle that finishes with impressive fireworks in the Spanish skies of beautiful Barcelona. The Paralympics : The Paralympics The Organizing Committee of the Barcelona Olympic Games (COOB) was concerned that the large number of Paralympic competitions might reduce the credibility of the Games built up by increasingly superior athletic performances. Boycotts : Boycotts The Barcelona Games were also marked for international sport. There was no more Soviet Union, East and West Germany, boycotts and rivalry between capitalists and communists. For the first time in three decades, there was no boycott. Slide 17: On The Olympic Games Only five cases of doping during the competition. The athletes were punished and none was medalist. Slide 18: The 1992 Games were perhaps the most successful modern Olympics. More than 9,300 athletes representing 169 countries participated. For the first time in three decades, there was no boycott. The dramatic political changes that had swept across eastern Europe had a tremendous effect on the Olympics. Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Croatia competed as independent countries.
