It is for this reason that Shanghai American School has endorsed a Child Protection Policy that defines the standards by which all SAS students should be treated with respect and dignity at all times. “ - Dr. Dennis Larkin The SAS Child Protection Policy : The SAS Child Protection Policy United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child Ensure that all children are safe and secure Professional and ethical obligation to identify Protecting children : Protecting children “Schools fill a special institutional role in society as protectors of children....Educators, having the opportunity to observe and interact with children over time, are in a unique position to identify children who need help and protection.” - SAS Board Policy# 8.6018 (excerpt) SAS Student Safety Net : SAS Student Safety Net Counselors Student Support Team Teachers Administrators Responsibilities : Responsibilities SAS staff members are mandatory reporters. The school is obligated to take steps to ensure that the child is safe. Response and Support : School counselors are involved in most cases of suspected abuse or neglect such as those involving: Student relationships with peers Parenting skills related to disciplining children at home Student-parent/guardian relationships Mental health issues such as depression, low self-esteem, grieving. Response and Support Response and Support : Some cases will be referred to outside resources: Severe mental health issues Ongoing physical/sexual abuse In extreme cases reports could be made to: The consulate The employer The home-of-record welfare office.
