STRUCTURE :

STRUCTURE (Firstly) Always present your presentation structure Why, when, what How Tips

WHY :

WHY You have embarked on a PhD… Getting feedback on your research To know PhD researchers / academics working in (and outside) your area Networking opportunity

WHEN & WHAT :

WHEN & WHAT It depends: first, second year? - Do you have a paper? Start with a graduate students’ conference (UACES Graduate Students’ Conference), but… Does your paper fit the conference?

HOW (1) :

HOW (1) Find out what is required (call for papers; single papers; panels) Abstract (stick to the word limit!) Your title Check the deadlines

HOW (2) :

HOW (2) Prepare your paper ahead of time (!) Check (ask if/for) if you can use a ppt presentation (but be prepared if technology fails!) Time allocation (15-20mns)

HOW (3) :

HOW (3) Dress fairly formally Don’t try and say too much/Don’t overload your slides Structure your presentation, you cannot say everything, select your main points and make it simple (any technical term?)

HOW (4) :

HOW (4) Practice your presentation, don’t speak too quickly, remember what you cannot miss out The more you read it, the more you will be familiar with it (…but if it is one of your PhD chapters…) Prepare for the conference room

HOW (5) :

HOW (5) Eye contact with the audience (but keep an eye on your time) If you use a ppt presentation, do not overload your slides and add your institution and email at the beginning of your presentation Don’t be too hard on yourself! Practice helps

HOW (6) :

HOW (6) Take notes on comments (write down your questions, but don’t worry if there aren’t any) If you do not understand a question, you can ask if it can be rephrased (and don’t worry if you do not know the answer!) Do not rush off, enjoy the conference, you may collect further feedback during the break…

FINAL TIPS :

FINAL TIPS Chair/Discussant Keep a record of your paper presentations (CV), who presented (may want to get in touch) Enjoy your conference paper! (You are the expert on your research!)
