Scope n Goals :Scope n Goals The Digital Library website was created to help fulfill the traditional mission as well as “select, collect, preserve and make accessible the accumulated wisdom of the world, without distinction as to income, religion, nationality, or other human condition.” (NYPL About).

Unique or very rare treasures too vulnerable for routine availability unwieldy or brittle artifacts that are difficult to serve
Key holdings in particular collection strengths identified with The Library
Little-known but important items from the collections deemed worthy of discovery

Obtain TIFF files or prints to enhance books, magazine or newspaper article, CD-ROM, website, television program, exhibition, calendar, brochure, or promotional campaign.

Graphic or textual materials from the Library’s collections can be digitally scanned and offered as high resolution TIFF files or low-resolution JPEGs. Images are scanned at 300 dpi.

Simultaneously, three low-resolution, 72-dpi "derivative" files are created for delivery on the web, at 150 pixels (thumbnail or index image), 300 pixels (detail view) and 760 pixels (enlargement), respectively, on the long side.

NYPL is working with Google to offer a portion of its collection online via Google Book Search. The items being digitized in this project are chosen based on the following criteria: they are in the public domain (published before 1923) and they are in good enough physical condition to withstand scanning. The items are being scanned in their entirety and will be available to the public for free.
