From Qualitative to Quantitative :From Qualitative to Quantitative How to Turn Qualitative Data Into Quantitative Instruments By Brandy Fleming NSG913 Qualitative Research Methods

Answer these Questions… :Answer these Questions… What’s the point? Why not go all Qual? How can mixing help? Why not always mix?

Quantitative Measurements :Quantitative Measurements Generalize findings Particular outcome Distinct variables Precise conditions Validate results Replication Hard sciences

Social Sciences :Social Sciences Behavior Context Decisions Experiences

Qualitative Methods :Qualitative Methods Understand process Grounded theory Open coding Axial coding Drawbacks Small, non-randomized populations Non-replicable Interpretive judgments Hard to claim causality Hard to get funding

Mixed-Methods Models :Mixed-Methods Models Complement More detailed analysis Increased validity Increased generalizability Other designs Triangulation Data transformation

Quantitative Instruments :Quantitative Instruments Questionnaires Surveys Structured interviews

Qualitative Data :Qualitative Data Semi-structured or open-ended interviews Focus groups Case-studies Participation Ethnography Textual

Mixed-Methods Problems :Mixed-Methods Problems De-contextualization Constant refining Cost

Equally Weighed? :Equally Weighed? Is there more priority given to quantitative methods in this type of mixed methods model or are they of equal value?

The point is not what we expect… :The point is not what we expect…

But looking closer at what we might have missed. :But looking closer at what we might have missed.

So let’s discuss… :So let’s discuss… If qualitative data is used to create a survey or questionnaire, do you consider the qualitative data to be inconsequential or superficial to the research model? Are there types of qualitative data that make for better quantitative instrument production, i.e. focus groups, case studies, interviews? Could you justify using qualitative data in a quantitative analysis in your area of interest?
