Premium member Presentation Transcript Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Teachingcoaches.com Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Protective Gear When selecting catchers gear a coach should look for the following: Protective helmet Mask that covers entire face and throat Chest protector that fits snug against a player’s chest and under the neckline Protective cup Shin guards that cover a player’s knees and cover their toes A catcher should use a catchers’ glove instead of a fielders glove Catchers Gear Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher : Position in the Box When getting into a squat position a catcher has to be conscious of not getting too close or too far away When getting too close, a catcher may interfere during a hitters’ swing When getting too far away a catcher may take strikes away from a pitcher because the ball may appear outside the plate when they catch it When far away a ball may hit the ground when it could be caught in the air A catcher when setting up should be able to lean over a touch the back foot of the hitter Position in Batter’s Box Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Signal Stance When giving signs, a catcher should do the following: Get into a squat position, making sure their feet are shoulder width apart and their knees are pointed towards the middle infielders Make sure that they give the sign in the middle of their legs, placing their hand along inseam of their pants Extend the glove off left knee Face directly at the pitcher Signal Stance Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher : Giving a Target When giving a target a catcher shall give the target at the bottom of the strike zone When setting up: A target shall be given as high as a catcher’s knees A catcher shall remember to keep their elbow on the outside of their leg Giving a Target Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Target on Corner When setting up on the corner a catcher shall align their chest directly over the corner Target on the Corner Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Receiving Stance When getting into a receiving stance with no one on and with less than two strikes, a catcher wants to do the following: Get as low as possible with their feet shoulder width apart and toes pointing slightly outward Feet should be flat on ground with a good low target at the hitters knees Elbow should be outside knee Receiving Stance Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Receiving Stance When getting into a receiving position a helpful hint is to: Have the catcher turn their feet slightly outward Bring their knees closer together Receiving Stance Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Throwing Stance During a throwing stance a catcher raises their rear end up even with their knees in order to move quickly A catcher’s throwing hand should be protected behind their calf Weight on balls of the feet Feet flat on the ground Right foot toes should be aligned with the in step of left foot Throwing Stance Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Throwing to Second Once a catcher receives the ball: They should take a small jab step (crow hop) towards second base with their right foot; transferring weight back to backside foot in order to make stride forward When crow hopping a catcher should throw their hands up through and across their chest in order to point their should at second base Throwing to Second Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Throwing to Third Once a catcher receives the ball: A catcher shall take a drop step back, clearing the hitter when a catcher steps towards third base Throwing to Third Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Blocking the Ball When a catcher attempts to block a ball in the dirt they should do the following: A catcher shall rotate forward onto their knees, on the ground, while placing their glove in between their knees As a catcher rotates forward they should attempt to center the ball in the middle of their chest while tucking their chin and bending forward at the waist A catcher shall attempt to just block a poor pitch and not try and catch it Blocking the Ball Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Blocking a Ball to the side When a catcher blocks a ball on right or left they should attempt to do the following: Shift their weight at a 45 degrees attempting to block the ball back towards the plate The key to moving at a 45 degrees is to anticipate to block every pitch and throw the (ball side) shoulder towards the chalk line Blocking Side to Side Slide 14: Catcher: Blocking Plate on a Tag When blocking the plate a catcher once they receive the ball with two hands: A catcher shall stay low and not stand up Once having the ball they should step across home plate, blocking the plate with their left leg A catcher in block position must make sure their foot is pointing towards the incoming runner in order to avoiding being spiked and/or injured Blocking Plate on a Tag Catcher Instruction : Catcher Instruction Catcher: Fielding a Bunt When fielding a bunt a catcher shall do the following: Bend knees Scoop ball, bringing hands and glove together underneath the ball Bend waist and place the ball in line with your nose Fielding a Bunt Slide 16: Catcher: Intentional Pass A catcher on an intentional pass should start their position directly on the outside corner A catcher shall extend their arm out to give the pitcher a target to throw to Intentional Pass Teachingcoaches.com : Teachingcoaches.com You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
