Chapter 9 The Internet and the World Wide Web

Slide 2: 

Internet: a global network of networks connecting hundreds of millions of users to each other and to other world-wide users. A common protocol called TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is used so connections between computers can be understood

Slide 3: 

Telecommunication: electronic communication between computers over distance. Modem: a translating device between digital and analog signals. DSL(digital subscriber lines): high speed option for home users. Cable modem: a specialized modem with speeds faster then DSL

Slide 4: 

Internet Service Provider: companies that provide home users access to the internet. Email: electronic mail, the main communication on the internet. Some other common terms: internet access, browser, chat rooms, instant message, and technical support. Uses for email in teaching: assignment transmission, class discussion, electronic keypals, student-student, student-teacher, and teacher-parent communication.

Slide 5: 

URL: uniform resource locator; designations for specific locations on the WWW Discussion: it provides people a way to communicate one-to-many. Mailing list: delivers emails to several people who subscribe to the list. Videoconferencing: live video with audio across the internet; it its in real-time.

Slide 6: 

File Transfer Protocol: the method used for transferring files among computers on the internet. Newsgroup: public conference dedicated to a specific topic. World Wide Web: the web is the most popular of the many services available on the internet. Hyperlink: a way to navigate the internet.

Slide 7: 

More common terms: web page, web site, home page, navigation button. Graphics formats: GIF-graphic interchange format, JPEG-joint photographic expert group. Audio formats: wav or MP3 (usually) Streaming audio and video: view or listen to it as it is downloading. Virtual Reality: 3 dimensional graphic environment that can be accessed on internet.

Slide 8: 

Search engines: programs that are designed to find web sites and pages based on key words. Portal: a doorway to the internet and its many resources.
