Grenadier Fish Biome :

Grenadier Fish Biome By Ashley Whitaker & Courtney McGill

About Me :

About Me I am a Grenadier fish. I have a large mouth and scaly skin. I swim slowly just above the bottom of the ocean searching for prey. There are about 200 different types of species of grenadier fish. I am also called a rattail. I can grow to be one-two feet long. I can live to be about 20-30 years old.

More About me :

More About me I have many nicknames I grow to about sixty centimeters long I live between 20-30 years I have many nicknames My scientific family is Macrouridae I grow to about sixty centimeters long I live between 20-30 years More About Me

TMAO :

TMAO We have really high levels of TMAO. TMAO stands for Trimethylamine N-Oxide. Which is a chemical compound that helps maintain my hydration levels of the body tissues in all the salt water.

My Biome Details :

My Biome Details I live on the ocean floor which is also called the abyssopelagic zone. There is often dead fish on the floor that I feed on. It is always dark, cold, and still. No photosynthesis takes place to replenish oxygen, but the creatures here do consume more than is provided. The nutrient salt concentration is higher than in the water above because the Abyssal and Hadal Zones are the areas where dead biological materials settle to the floor.

My Biome Details Continued :

My Biome Details Continued The composition of the sea floor varies with depth. In areas where the sea floor is shallower than 4000M, the floor is mainly composed of calcareous shells of foraminiferan zooplankton and phytoplankton, like coccolithophores. If the sea floor is deeper than 4000m, the shells tend to dissolve and the sediment is mainly composed of brown clays, siliceous remains of radiolarian zooplankton and phytoplankton, such as diatoms.

Food Chain :

Food Chain I am a detrivore meaning I eat dead things that fall to the ocean floor. I am also a carnivore because I eat small fish and shrimp

Slide 8:

There is a spike in biomass here. This is because the collection of sediment gives a food source. Fish at these depths often have huge, gaping, underslung jaws to sift through the sand and catch food. Some creatures, like the anglerfish use a combination of a huge mouth and bioluminescence to catch prey. Carnivores and scavengers are much less abundant here than animals that feed on the sea floor mud and suspended matter. Animals here must withstand pressures of up to 11,000 psi. They tend to be grey or black for camouflage and unstreamlined for energy conservation. Many are blind, and they are thought to reproduce very slowly.

Human Interaction :

Human Interaction I do not interact with humans often because the abyssal is one of the most unexplored places on earth. We are fished commercially by humans.

Questions :

Questions What is TMAO? What zone does a grenadier fish live in? Why are they normally black, grey, or brown? Does the water move a lot in the abyssal zone? What are some adaptations the grenadier fish has made to live in this biome?
