Jesus' Authority Questioned :

Jesus' Authority Questioned Luke 20:1-8

Jesus Cleanses the Temple Luke 19:46, 47 :

Jesus Cleanses the Temple Luke 19:46, 47 Jesus taught in the Temple. The chief priests, scribes, and other leaders of the people tried to find a way to kill Jesus. 

Slide 3:

Matthew 7:28-29 28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Slide 4:

In Matthew 28:18 Jesus said this, “All authority is given unto Me in heaven and earth...all authority.”  This is what it means to be absolutely sovereign.  This is what it means to answer to no one outside yourself, to have all authority.  Jesus demonstrated His authority in a number of ways.

Slide 6:

Luke 20:1 Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him

Slide 7:

Luke 19:47 And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, Luke 19:48 and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.

Slide 8:

Jesus taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel

Slide 9:

Luke 20:1 Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him

Slide 10:

There were 24 courses of priests who took turns serving in the Temple. At Passover, ALL of the priests were in attendance. Everyone who was anyone in the priesthood was here. And so, it was the upper level from among the priests who were a part of this delegation. The Chief Priests

The Scribes :

The Scribes These were the scholars and the experts in the Scriptures. It was their duty to correctly hand copy the Scriptures.

The Elders :

The Elders These were the representatives of the major tribes and families of Israel.

Slide 13:

The Sanhedrin Together, these three groups comprised the Sanhedrin, the Supreme Court of Israel. There were 70 members of that August (esteemed or respected) body. Their president was the high priest himself.

1. The Challenge To Jesus’ Authority :

1. The Challenge To Jesus’ Authority

Slide 15:

Luke 20:2 and spoke to Him, saying, "Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?"

Slide 16:

Luke 19:46 saying to them, "It is written, 'My house is a house of prayer,' but you have made it a 'den of thieves.'"

Slide 17:

Notice that they do not ask Jesus why He cleansed the Temple. They knew why He had done what He had done. They knew that they had turned the Temple into a den of robbers. They knew that they were guilty of fleecing the flock instead of feeding the flock. And so, the question is not, "Why?" but rather, "By what authority?"

2. Jesus Replies: :

2. Jesus Replies:

Slide 19:

Luke 20:3 But He answered and said to them, "I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me:

Slide 20:

Luke 20:4 "The baptism of John -- was it from heaven or from men?" The question regards the source and the authority of the baptism of John. It came from one of two locations: (1) From heaven. (2) From men.

3. The Reasoning of the Religious Leaders: :

3. The Reasoning of the Religious Leaders:

Slide 22:

Luke 20:5 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

Slide 23:

Luke 20:6 "But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded (convinced) that John was a prophet.“ Matthew 21:26 "But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet."

If we say... :

If we say... "From heaven" "Why did you not believe him?“ "From men" They will lose popularity with the people

Slide 25:

Luke 20:7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

4. The Response of Jesus: :

4. The Response of Jesus:

Slide 27:

Luke 20:8 And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

Conclusion :

Conclusion

Slide 29:

Matthew 9:6-8, it says He had authority to forgive sins, an authority they understood belonged only to one and that one is God.  In John 1:12 He claimed authority to save, that is authority to give life, spiritual life and salvation.  In John 5:27 it says that He was given authority to judge all men.

Slide 30:

In John 10:18 He said, “I have authority to lay My life down, and I have authority to take it again.” In John 17:2 tells us He has authority over all mankind. God the Son is the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the Savior of mankind, the authority over all Creation, and the head of the Church. Jesus is the Supreme King because of His supreme authority over all Creation.
