A podcast is a series of digital computer files, usually either digital audio or video, that is released periodically and made available for download by means of web syndication The most common audio file format used is MP3. (http://www.wikipedia.org) Why are Podcasts a Great Tool for the Classroom? : Why are Podcasts a Great Tool for the Classroom? Podcasts can be used across the curriculum in grades K-12. Unlike some other web tools, podcasts are great for young elementary students. Making their work public motivates students to do their best work–their most creative, planned, and precise work. Podcasts can be educational and instrumentally valuable in teaching students a variety of important twenty-first literacy skills. Slide 10: Process Drama - Writing in a Role, Reader’s Theater, Mantle of the Expert and Role Playing, can easily be extended by recording the end product. Meet the Author - Recording "Meet the Author" reports as podcasts allows the classroom community of learners to construct a library of peer-produced author biographies that could be used in a variety of extension activities after the fact. Slide 11: Science Logs - Podcasting observations throughout the course of an experiment allows another level of reflection on the experience. Art Critiques - For a student art show, the students could record walking tours of their own work. (www.fcit.usf.edu/podcasts/) Reasons to Use Podcasts in School Libraries : Reasons to Use Podcasts in School Libraries To promote the library Using student products to share learning Sharing school news Providing professional development Reflection : Reflection In conclusion, I have found that podcasts have more uses than what I previously thought. Besides entertainment, podcasts can be used to enhance lessons, motivate students and even help English as a Second Language Learners in their quest to learn a new language.
