William Arthur Armstrong Keen (1820–1894) : 

William Arthur Armstrong Keen (1820–1894) Served as second pastor from November 1870 to January 1872

Cora Adams Peoples (1873–1942) : 

Cora Adams Peoples (1873–1942) Parents were first couple married in new church fellowship. Father was first person to unite with Johnson City Baptist Church by baptism on August 5, 1871. Lifelong member of the Baptist congregation.

Elihu McNees Family : 

Elihu McNees Family Family united with Johnson City Baptist Church in 1872. Family members have been members of this church for seven generations.

First Presbyterian Church : 

First Presbyterian Church Temporary home for Baptists from 1872 to 1881. Baptists held worship services on the first weekend of each month while constructing their own house of worship.

Asa Routh : 

Asa Routh Assisted Elder Martin V. Noffsinger in organizing the presbytery of the church on July 3, 1869 Served as third pastor June 1873 to November 1876

James A. Cargille (1845–1919) : 

James A. Cargille (1845–1919) Served as song leader and deacon until his death in 1919 Chaired building committee to construct first house of worship Second wife, Jodie Lee, and third wife, Tillie, were church organists

Dora Cargille Sproles (1872–1969) : 

Dora Cargille Sproles (1872–1969) Daughter of James and Polly Cargille Baptized May 1883 in Brush Creek Organized first library in Central Baptist Church

John C. Davidson (1844–?) : 

John C. Davidson (1844–?) Served as fourth pastor from 1876 to 1880 Church membership reached a high of 57 members Baptized 23 new members

Dr. W. W. Worley (1840–1884) : 

Dr. W. W. Worley (1840–1884) Served as fifth pastor from October 1889 to July 1891 A physician and gifted lay preacher Formed a committee to build a house of worship Moved meeting place to Science Hill Male and Female Academy Organized the first Sunday school

Little White Church : 

Little White Church House of worship from 1883 to 1910 Lot purchased on Main Street for $100 Thomas Hiter Crouch served as sixth pastor from September 1881 to November 1883

John Wesley Whitlock (1847–1886) : 

John Wesley Whitlock (1847–1886) Served the church as seventh pastor, from January 1884 to October 1885 Started two worship services each month Church purchased first organ

Other Pastors The eighth pastor, Elijah Allison, served from June 1886 to March 1887 Dr. J. T. Kincannon, ninth pastor, served from February 1887 to June 1889 New parsonage built on West Myrtle Street Church membership grew to 150 members Sunday School enrollment grew to 191 members

Daniel M. and Dola McNees Setzer Daniel and his wife, Dola McNees Setzer, started mission Sunday schools, which are existing churches in the area today.

Snow Memorial Baptist Church : 

Snow Memorial Baptist Church Started as a mission in 1892 Became an independent church July 17, 1897 Named Snow Chapel in honor of Pastor James Snow

Unaka Avenue Baptist Church : 

Unaka Avenue Baptist Church Started in 1891 as East Carnegie Mission Organized as Piney Grove Baptist Church in 1915 Renamed and moved to Unaka Avenue in 1922

University Parkway Baptist Church : 

University Parkway Baptist Church Organized as Henry Street Mission Became Second Baptist Church in 1914 Renamed Temple Baptist Church Moved and renamed University Parkway Baptist Church

Robert Rees Bayless (1843-1917) : 

Robert Rees Bayless (1843-1917) Last moderator of First Baptist Church

William A. Vines : 

William A. Vines Served as twelfth pastor From September 1893 to October 1895 Finances of church improved Church membership increased with 70 baptisms and 30 transferred letters Organized the first Baptist Young Peoples Union Built new baptistery

Other Pastors and Events Frank Willis Barnett, thirteenth pastor, served from September 1895 to October 1896. William Butterworth, first ministerial student from congregation, entered Carson-Newman College. D. A. Glenn, fourteenth pastor, served from April 1897 to December 1898. Electricity for lighting replaced oil lamps.

Other Pastors and Events (continued) John C. Davidson, fifteenth pastor, served second term from April 1899 to January 1901. Instituted envelope system of giving S. H. Johnson, sixteenth pastor, served from July 1901 to October 1904. Financial problems and dissension over location plagued the Church.

Other Pastors and Events (continued) J. H. Snow, seventeenth pastor, served second term from January 1905 to October 1905. Church received 31 members by baptism and 7 new members by letter transfer. On May 5, 1905, fire destroyed downtown Johnson City but miraculously, the church building was spared.

Other Pastors and Events (continued) W. James Robinson, eighteenth pastor, served from March 1906 to October 1906. Membership reached 417 with 29 additions In April 1907, during interim without a pastor, 102 members formed Roan Street Baptist Church. Clarence Hodge, nineteenth pastor, served from July 1907 to July 1908.

John R. Chiles As twentieth pastor, served from January 1909 to January 1910 Worked closely with Roan Street Baptist Church pastor, Thomas C. Davis, to unite the two congregations

Roan Street Baptist Church : 

Roan Street Baptist Church Located at North Roan Street and Watauga Avenue Thomas C. Davis served as pastor Consolidated with First Baptist to become Central Baptist Church April 21, 1910 Home of Central Baptist Church until 1913

Thomas C. Davis Pastor of Roan Street Baptist from 1907 to 1910 Resigned to study at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas Membership almost doubled during these years to 521

Robert Crouch Hunter : 

Robert Crouch Hunter He and wife Jennie proposed to purchase and donate a lot at 300 N. Roan for $5,000 if the two congregations would unite.
