Slide 5: AND ALL YOU NEED IS A STRAW AND A POTATO! I’m totally serious! And this is how you do it: : And this is how you do it: Keep your fingers on the front and thumb on the back of the potato. Grab the straw with your writing hand and cap the top end with your thumb. STAB THE STRAW THROUGH THE POTATO! …SO HAVE YOU TRIED? : …SO HAVE YOU TRIED? Were you able to do it? Slide 8: Wondering how we were able to do it? Wondering how was it possible? It is because……… : It is because……… 1. Placing your thumb over the end of the straw traps the air inside. Air molecule Straw Your thumb Slide 10: 2. When you trap the air inside the straw, the air compresses and give the straw strength; which in turn keeps the sides from bending as you jam the straw through the potato. Potato The compressed air molecules act like a cushion in between the flimsy sides of the straw. Your thumb Slide 11: 3. The trapped, compressed air makes the straw strong enough to cut through the skin, cut through the potato, and out the other side. Your thumb Air molecule Straw Potato Slide 12: 4. Without the thumb covering the hole, the air is simply pushed out of the straw and the straw compresses and breaks as it hits the hard potato surface. Straw Air molecule Potato Squashed straw The air molecules escape out of the straw as it breaks However…… : However…… Without the thumb covering the hole, the air is simply pushed out of the straw and it compress and breaks as it hits the hard potato surface.
