History of Basketball He wanted to create a game that relied on an individual’s skill rather than solely on a person’s strength. The first game of basketball was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets as the goal.

History of Basketball Dr. Naismith went on to be the founder of Kansas University’s Basketball Program. Naismith derived 13 main rules for the game of basketball.

2. The ball may be batted with one, or both hands,
but never with the fist. 1. The ball may be thrown in any direction. 3. A player cannot run with the ball without dribbling it. 4. The ball must be held between the hands. The arms or body must not

allowed. Breaking this rule will result in a foul.

If either team makes 3 consecutive fouls, it will result in a goal for the other team. 6. A foul is striking at the ball with your fist, or violating rules 3, 4, or 5. 8. A goal will be made when the ball is thrown into the basket. When the ball goes out of bounds, the player will have five seconds to throw the ball to a teammate. Rules of Basketball 10. The referee shall be the judge of play, fouls, and also has the power
to disqualify players.

The game shall be divided into two 15-minute halves with a five
minute rest time between halves. The referee shall determine when a goal has been made, when the
ball is out of bounds, and which team has position of the ball. The team that makes the most goals in the time period shall be

Basketball Today Basketball was introduced to the Olympics in 1936. The National Basketball Association (NBA), which was
created in 1946, consists of 30 teams. The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA),
was created in, 1997, and consists of 13 teams.
