Minerals : 

Minerals * Help build your body because they become parts of your bones, muscles, organs and body fluids * Also called regulatory foods because they can help in controlling the body processes and are responsible for the normal functioning of the body systems

The Macrominerals Are found in large amount of foods

CALCIUM : 

CALCIUM Makes the bones and teeth hard and strong Helps control the heart, muscles and nerves A deficiency causes weak bones and teeth, slow growth, slow blood clotting and rickets Food sources: milk, cheese, dairy products, fish with fine bones and green leafy vegetables

PHOSPHORUS : 

PHOSPHORUS Helps form the bones and teeth Makes and repairs cells and keeps muscles and nerves healthy Lack of phosphorus results in poorly developed bones and teeth, slow growth and rickets Food sources: milk, cheese, meat, fish, whole grain products, legumes like peas, beans and peanuts

SODIUM : 

SODIUM Controls water balance in the body cells Too much sodium may cause high blood pressure and kidney problems Food sources: milk, fish, eggs, table salt, miso and tomatoes

CHLORIDE : 

CHLORIDE Helps control the water balance in the body cells Mainly taken from the table salt

POTASSIUM : 

POTASSIUM Another mineral which helps the control balance in the body Prevents cramps, hypertension, hypokalemia Food sources: milk, meat, bananas, beans, carrots, papayas, and raisins

MAGNESIUM : 

MAGNESIUM Helps develop healthy muscles, heart and nerves Food sources: nuts, dried beans, peas, dark green leafy vegetables, seafoods, whole grain cereals, and bread

SULFUR : 

SULFUR Helps in the development of bones and teeth Helps in blood clotting Transforms food into energy Food sources: cabbage, eggs, radish, and onions

The Microminerals Are found in tiny amounts in your food

IRON : 

IRON Very important in the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells – carry oxygen to all parts of the body A deficiency can cause weakness and anemia Food sources: liver, organ meats, egg yolk, fish, green leafy vegetables, dried fruits, peas, beans and whole grain cereals

IODINE : 

IODINE Responsible for the functioning of the thyroid gland A deficiency can cause enlargement of the thyroid gland, commonly known as goiter Food sources: seafoods, iodized salt, vegetable grown near salt water

ZINC : 

ZINC Helps to make body wounds heal easily Also helps the body cells grow Food sources: animal proteins, wheat germ, nuts, sunflower seeds

MANGANESE : 

MANGANESE Keeps the nervous system healthy Helps in the proper functioning of the heart Food sources: whole grain cereals, bread, seafoods, dark green leafy vegetables, dried beans and peas

COPPER and COBALT : 

COPPER and COBALT Help the body utilize vitamins and other minerals Food sources: organ meat, shellfish, dairy products
