Arabic is the largest living member of the Semitic language family Slide 2: Arabic is the primary language in the Arab states of the Middle East and North Africa. The Arabic states are Arabic speaking countries expanding from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Arabian sea in the east and from the Mediterranean sea in the north to the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean in the southeast. Slide 3: Stretching across more than 12.9 million square kilometers (5million square miles) of North Africa and the part of North East Africa and south west Asia called the Middle East, totaling 25 countries and a population of about 325 million. Slide 5: There are approximatley 280 million native speakers and 250 million non native speakers worldwide. There are 27 sublanguages within the Arabic macro language where they are spoken throughout the Arab world. Arabic language is written from right to left in a cursive style and consists of 28 basic letters. Slide 6: There are two terms that refer to the Arabic language, formal/classical which Arabs name “Fusha”, and colloquial Arabic which is the standard dialect language used when talking that consists of different accents among different countries. The classical term refers to the written Arabic that is also used in the Quran. The first documented record written in Arabic dates from the early 4th century AD. Its appearance in the Quran was in early 7th century. Slide 7: The main religion in the arabic world is Islam, however, there are many religions in the Arabic world. Christians make up to 5.5% of the east. They also make up to 45% in Lebanon, 12% in Syria. Islam and Christianity break up to several sects and subreligions such as Muslim - (Shi'a, Sunni, Druze, Isma'ilite, Alawite or Nusayri), Christian -(Maronite Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Melkite Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, Armenian Catholic, Syriac Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Chaldean, Assyrian, Coptic, Protestant). Slide 8: While many people think Arabs are new to the United States, in fact, Arabs have been arriving to the United States for hundreds of years. There are reports that Arabs came America with the Spanish explorers in the 15th century. Arab traders were well represented at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and the 1893 Chicago Colombian Exposition. Slide 9: The first Arabic language newspaper in the US started publishing in 1892. By 1895, there were three Arab churches in New York, with many more to come across the US in the next 20 years. The first Arab mosque was built near Detroit, Michigan in 1923. The existence of newspapers and religious institutions are sure signs that an immigrant group has become large enough to establish communities. There are 3,500,000 Arab Americans in the United States according to the Arab American institute. Slide 10: Arabic lent many words to other languages os the Islamic world. Arabic also contributed majorly in Science, Mathematics and Philosophy in the middle ages. Arabic has not just led to words in other languages but also has borrowed words from other languages including Greek, Perian, and Sanskrit. Slide 11: Some of the famous Arab scientists: Al khwarrizmi, Ibn Al haytham (mathematics) Al kindi, Avicenna, Ibn khaldon (chemistry) Al farabi (logic) Jibran khalil Jibran, Nazir Qabbani, Naquib Mahfouz, Ameen Rihani (Author, Poet) Slide 12: Being a student of SDSU, statistics have been collected to see how many students are taking an Arabic course at SDSU this spring 2009.
