(15) It is important to be able to write about the work of some of the alphabet agencies: Slide 6: Provided immediate RELIEF (help) for the Winter of 1932-1933 Especially food and clothes for the homeless Food Clothes X Slide 7: Provided immediate RELIEF (help) before the Winter of 1933-1934 Created jobs like improving roads and building schools, but… Some jobs seemed pointless Slide 8: RECOVERY was about creating jobs so that people would spend money and the cycle of prosperity would begin again WPA created work for unskilled workers including artists and actors Slide 10: Dealt with problems caused by the Tennessee River which flooded in Spring and dried up in the Summer 21 Dams Dams generated electricity + were used for water sports Slide 11: Paid farmers to farm less land… …and to keep less animals… …This helped farmers but many farm workers (who were often Black) lost their jobs… Slide 12: Set up voluntary codes so that workers were treated fairly. Child labour was forbidden Businesses that followed the code could use the blue eagle symbol Slide 13: Social Security Act (1935) REFORM meant that laws were changed so that Americans who were old, sick or unemployed would be helped by the government.
