HYPOTHERMIA :HYPOTHERMIA Define Hypothermia.
Know the causes of Hypothermia.
Recognise the signs and symptoms of Hypothermia.
Describe the treatment of hypothermia.
Be better placed to deal with it.
Definition :Definition Occurs when body’s core temp falls from its normal 37 Deg C, to below 35 Deg C.
If drops below 26 Deg C condition may be fatal.
Recovery has been known from as low as 10 Deg C.
So never give up trying to save them.
Causes of Hypothermia :Causes of Hypothermia Immersion in cold water.
Inadequate cold protection.
Protection lessened by Alcohol/Drugs.
Certain medical conditions.
Age.
Signs of Hypothermia :Signs of Hypothermia Feeling cold and miserable.
Pale skin and cold to touch.
Uncontrollable shivering at start.
Shivering decreases.
Replaced by lack of muscle co-ordination and slurred speech.
Signs of Hypothermia :Signs of Hypothermia Slowing down of thought processes, confusion, disorientation.
Irregular heartbeat, slowing of pulse.
Loss of consciousness.
Difficult detection of breathing or pulse.
DEATH.
Treatment of Hypothermia :Treatment of Hypothermia Remove from cold environment.
Lay down and replace any wet clothing.
Raise legs and insulate body and head to prevent further heat loss.
Passive re-warming or 40 Deg C, bath or shower.
Warm sweet drinks, no alcohol.
Maintain Airway.
Medical help.
Remember things not to DO! :Remember things not to DO! Don’t stand them up.
Don’t allow alcohol or smoking.
Don’t use space blankets.
Don’t use direct sources of heat.
Don’t use shower or bath on unconscious.
Don’t move casualty to much .
Don’t give ECC, unless heart stopped.
