Use of fly ash in different sectors:

Use of fly ash in different sectors By Sneha.B Manaswini.k

What is Fly ash...?:

What is Fly ash...? Fly ash is finely divided residue resulting from the combustion of powdered coal and transported by the flue gases and collected by electrostatic precipitator.

UTILIZATION IN DIFFERENT FIELDS:

UTILIZATION IN DIFFERENT FIELDS Roads & embankments Building components Eg:bricks, blocks, cement, mortar&concrete Agricultural field Hydro sector Fly ash in preparation of other products

Roads & Embankments:

Roads & Embankments Light weight material, causes lesser settlements. Easy to handle and compact. No large lumps to be broken down. High permeability ensures free and efficient drainage. Low compressibility. High strength due to pozzolanic nature. Amenable stabilizatiion. Reduces cost of construction.

ADVANTAGES OF FLY ASH IN CONCRETE:

ADVANTAGES OF FLY ASH IN CONCRETE Fly ash is a pozzolana. Improves concrete’s workability. Generally exhibits less bleeding & segregation. Sulfate and alkali aggregate resistance. It has a low heat of hydration. Cost of flyash is less than portland cement.

FLY ASH BRICKS:

FLY ASH BRICKS

USE OF FLY ASH BRICKS:

USE OF FLY ASH BRICKS Modern construction prefers use of fly ash bricks. Fly ash bricks are an environment friendly cost saving building product. These bricks are 3 times stronger than conventional bricks with consistent strength. Raw materials for flyash bricks are: Flyash, sand (or) stone dust, lime, gypsum, cement.

ADVANTAGES OF FLY ASH BRICKS:

ADVANTAGES OF FLY ASH BRICKS No breakage during transport. Due to Uniform size of bricks, mortar & plaster reduces almost by 50%. Seepage of water through bricks is considerably reduced. There is no requirement of soaking in water for 24 hours. Sprinkling of water is enough.

ADVANTAGES OF FLY ASH BRICKS:

ADVANTAGES OF FLY ASH BRICKS Appearance. Structural capability. Durability and moisture resistance. Sustainability. Buildability, durability and cost. Applicability.

AGRICULTURAL SECTOR:

AGRICULTURAL SECTOR Advantages of fly ash: Improves permeability, fertility & texture of soil. Reduces bulk density of soil. Optimize P H value. Improves water holding capacity / porosity. Improves the nutritional quality of food crop.

AGRICULTURAL SECTOR :

AGRICULTURAL SECTOR Fly ash improves soil aeration. Crops grown on fly ash amended soil are safe for human consumption & ground water quality is not affected. Early maturity of crop. Conserves plant nutrients/water. Provides macro and micro nutrients.

HYDRO SECTOR:

HYDRO SECTOR The first use of fly ash concrete in hydro sector is in the U.S. Hoover Dam project in 1929. Too much internal heat in concrete was predicted to have a detrimental effect on concrete strengths. It was found that by reducing the amount of portland cement in a concrete mix and replacing it with fly ash, the same strength could be achieved while the internal temperature of the concrete could be greatly reduced. Fly ash has also been found to effectively and economically reduce the risk of ASR (Alkali-Silica Reaction).

USE OF FLY ASH IN PREPARATION OF OTHER PRODUCTS:

USE OF FLY ASH IN PREPARATION OF OTHER PRODUCTS Various high value added products developed using flyash as raw material. The use of carbon derived from flyash as an adsorbant for waste water treatment and its use as filler for rubber industry has been established. The use of flyash for manufacture of high wear resistant tiles appears to be viable as a substitute for high alumina ceramics for various abrasion and wear resistant applications. Coal ash mineral wool is produced abroad based on well developed reliable technology. Flyash composite wood substitutes developed in India using 25-35% flyash is considered to be low cost an better alternative to ordinary wood.
