INTRODUCTION:

INTRODUCTION Profit maximisation by exploiting labour resulted in the formation of trade union to make the management aware of their responsibilities towards the most important resource of the organisation. i.e., human resource. Thus trade unions are formed to protect the interest of the employees. Trade union is an important actor or participant of industrial relations.

MEANING :

MEANING According to G.D.H. Cole , a trade union means, “an association of workers in one or more professions-an association is carried on mainly for the purpose of protecting and advancing the members’ economic interest in connection with their daily work”

DEFINITION:

DEFINITION Indian Trade Union Act, 1926 defined trade union as “any combination whether temporary or permanent formed primarily for the purpose of regulating the relations between workmen and employer or, between workmen and workmen or, between employer and employer Or for imposing restrictive conditions on the conduct of any trade or business and include any federation of two or more trade unions.”

WHY DO WORKERS JOIN TRADE UNIONS???:

WHY DO WORKERS JOIN TRADE UNIONS??? Workers join trade unions to achieve their objectives which they could not achieve individually. Specifically workers join trade union due to the following reasons To attain economic security To improve their bargaining power and balance it with that of management

FUNCTIONS:

FUNCTIONS The functions of trade union is classified into 4 categories Protective or Militant function Extra-mural or Fraternal function Social function Political function Ancillary function

PROTECTIVE OR MILITANT FUNCTION :

PROTECTIVE OR MILITANT FUNCTION These functions include protecting the workers’ interests , i.e., hike in wages, providing more benefits, job security, raise the status of workers as a part of industry, protect labors against victimization and injustice etc., through collective bargaining and direct action such as strikes, gheraos etc

Extra-mural or Fraternal function :

Extra-mural or Fraternal function These functions include providing financial and non financial assistance to workers during the period of strikes and lockouts, extension of medical facilities during sickness and casualties, provision of education, reaction, recreational and housing facilities, provision of social and religious benefits etc

SOCIAL FUNCTION :

SOCIAL FUNCTION These functions include carrying out social service activities, discharging responsibilities through various sections of the society like educating the customers

POLITICAL FUNCTION :

POLITICAL FUNCTION These functions include affiliating a union to political party, helping the political party in enrolling members, collecting donations, canvassing during election period, seeking the help of political parties during the strike and lockouts

ANCILLARY FUNCTION :

ANCILLARY FUNCTION Ancillary functions of trade union include: Communication Welfare activities Education Research

Communication :

Communication Trade union Communicate its activities, programmes, decisions, achievements etc., to its members through publication of news letters or magazines.

2. Welfare activities Trade union undertake welfare activities like acquiring of house sites, establishment of co operative housing societies, co operative credit societies, organizing training activities etc

3. Education Trade union provide educational facilities to its members and their family members

4. Research:

4. Research Trade union arrange to conduct research programmes. They systematically collect and analyze data and information for collective bargaining, preparing notes for union officials, for court cases etc. They also arrange to analyses macro data about the economy, industry, and different sectors.

REFORMIST UNIONS:

REFORMIST UNIONS Reformist union aims at the preservation of the capitalist economy and the maintenance of competitive production based industrial relation. This is again classified into 2 categories: Business union Friendly or Uplifting union

1. Business union :

1 . Business union This type of union are built around congenial employee-employer relation. Business union primarily protect the workers interest by participating in collective bargaining with the employer. These union generally been craft conscious rather than class conscious. These union prefer voluntary arbitration and conciliation.

2. Friendly or Uplifting union :

2 . Friendly or Uplifting union These unions aspire to elevate the moral, intellectual and social life of workers. These unions concentrates on education, health, insurance and benefits. These unions are not craft conscious but interest conscious of the workers. Though these unions emphasis on collective bargaining and mutual insurance they advocate co operative enterprise and profit sharing

REVOLUTIONARY UNION:

REVOLUTIONARY UNION These unions aim at replacing the present system with the new and different institutions based on the ideals that are regarded as preferable. These union aim at destroying the capitalistic system, abolish private poverty and installing socialist or communistic systems. These unions are of two type: Political 2. Anarchist
