Stages of Sleep

PowerPoint Presentation:

EEG Patterns Pattern Characteristics Beta waves High- frequency patterns that reflect concentration and alertness. Alpha waves Lower-frequency patterns associted with being relaxed or drowsy. Stage 1 Light sleep lasting up to 10 mins ; includes theta waves(low frequency and amplitude) Stage 2 Deeper sleep characterized by occational “sleep spindle” (brief high frequency waves),lasting up to 20 min. Stage 3 Progressively more muscle relaxation and emergence of delta waves(slower);last s up to 40 mins . Stage 4 Dee p sleep when sleeper is difficult to rouse; Delta waves- large, slow brain waves-occur. Stage 5 REM Sleep Instead of reentering stage 1 sleep, the individual shows patterns similar to those relaxed wakefulness;most dreaming occurs in this stage;lasts for about 10 mins . In 1 st sleep cycle of the night and up to 1 hour in the last

Theory of Dream 2.) Rosalind Carthwright – (1977) emphasized the problem solving function of dreams. According to her, dreams provide to work through everyday problems. 1.) Sigmund Freud – (1900) stressed the wish-fulfilling function of dreams. Ungratified needs are expressed thru dreams. 3.) John Allan Hobson (1998) and Robert Mc Carley (1997) – assert that dreams are merely products of periodic neural activation that produces "wide awake” brain waves during REM sleep. The neurons firing periodically in lower brain centers and random signals to the cortex. This theory gives less emphasis to the role of emotional factors as a determinant of dreams.
