Details The Chari River is the main source of water in Lake Chad It flows from the Central African Republic, through Chad, and into Lake Chad. There are many islands in the lake because it is so shallow. Lake Chad used to cover a larger amount of area, but it is decreasing in size. In 1823, it was one of the largest lakes in the world. Economically, it is very important. The lake provides water to the countries surrounding it. This is one reason why the lake is shrinking. Not related to global warming.
