Premium member Presentation Transcript Lake Chad : Lake Chad Ellen Davenport Geographic Location : Geographic Location In northern/central Africa - surrounded by Chad, Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon Various Variations of Name : Various Variations of Name Lake Chad (English) Lac Tchad (French) Lago Chad (Spanish) Details : Details The Chari River is the main source of water in Lake Chad It flows from the Central African Republic, through Chad, and into Lake Chad. There are many islands in the lake because it is so shallow. Lake Chad used to cover a larger amount of area, but it is decreasing in size. In 1823, it was one of the largest lakes in the world. Economically, it is very important. The lake provides water to the countries surrounding it. This is one reason why the lake is shrinking. Not related to global warming. Slide 5: Lake Chad is located in western Chad, also landlocked by Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger The surrounding countries began to fight over rights to the remaining water in the lake. farmers and herders vs. fishermen Plan to Save Lake Chad : Plan to Save Lake Chad In the 1960’s a plan was made to connect the Ubangi River to Lake Chad The river would give the lake enough water to meet the needs of civilians in the surrounding countries. The plan was not passed until 2008, when a similar proposal was made. Slide 7: Yellow: Chari River Continued : Continued Size: In the 1960’s, Lake Chad was the fourth largest lake in Africa, with an area of 26,000 km². (A bit larger than Lake Erie). Currently, the surface area of the lake is around 1,350 km² (521 square miles). The lake is currently about twenty-four times the size of Jordan Lake Average Depth: 1.5 meters (5 feet) Jordan Lake has a depth of 66 feet.
