ABSTRACT *Power System Optimization Software or Supervisory Control allows the operator to apply objectives and constraints to achieve an optimal power system operation. *In power system optimization mode, recommendations are implemented based on the predefined set of objectives. ETAP power system optimization software utilizes optimal power flow algorithms and user-defined logics to determine the best operating settings for the system. *Power system optimization can be used to assist energy consumers to automatically operate the system and minimize system losses, reduce peak load consumption, or minimize control adjustment. *For energy producers or co-generators, power system optimization can be set to minimize generation fuel cost, optimize power system operation, and maximize system security. :

TRENDS IN POWER SYSTEM PROTECTION *Whenever a new technology surfaces, engineers try to specify and develop new products which make the best use of this new technology. Unfortunately, history has shown that the products finally adopted as industry standards are not always the best possible application of the new technology . * Factors such as competitive strategies of product manufacturers may have a much greater influence on the technology and product standards than the optimum use of the new technology for the application. Video tape technology and computer operating systems are just two of the many examples. *In this paper, the factors that have been critical in shaping the technology and product evolution of present day P&C (protection and control) systems are described and discussed. The paper further discusses products which, if developed and made commercially available, would provide significant added value to electric utilities by making optimum use of present day technology.

TRENDS IN ELECTRICAL TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION TECHNOLOGY * Transmission congestion occurs when actual or scheduled flows of electricity across a line or piece of equipment are restricted below desired levels — either by the physical or electrical capacity of the line or by operational restrictions created and enforced to protect the security and reliability of the grid. *Simply put, congestion occurs when available low-cost energy cannot be delivered to the demand location due to transmission limitations. At these times, higher-cost power generation located closer to the load center must be dispatched to meet load requirements . *India’s central and state governments have begun efforts to reform the power sector. The liberalisation of India’s electricity market, initiated a decade ago, was expected torationalise consumption and improves the allocation of financial and energy resources.But the Indian power sector is now facing a serious crisis with implications for the country’s overall economic growth and development.

SF6 CIRCUIT BREAKER * The RH Systems Model 973-SF6 Analyzer was specifically designed for measurement of humidity and SF 6 purity in gas insulated switchgear systems. Humidity measurement data is displayed in ppmv, ppmw and dew/frost point at either system pressure or standard pressure. *Purity measurement is displayed directly in % volume SF 6 . SCADA CONTROL SYSTEM SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. SCADA generally refers to an industrial computer system that monitors and controls a process. In the case of the transmission and distribution elements of electrical utilities, *SCADA will monitor substations, transformers and other electrical assets. SCADA systems are typically used to control geographically dispersed assets that are often scattered over thousands of square kilometres . *SCADA Communications are required when direct/wired communications to the remote sites are prohibitively expensive or it is too time consuming to construct wire line communications. CONCLUSION *Thus by using this systems Voltage sags phase jumps , flicker, harmonics and other power quality problems can be taken care of by the HVDC Light . * It has some inherent properties supporting power quality to some extent during normal operation. If sensitive industry is located nearby, special controls can then be implemented further enhancing power quality. *Active power transfer may then become curtailed for some 100 ms around the sag occurrence. This can in certain industries like paper mills; textile industry; oil refinery; semiconductor industry etc. avoid production stops. *The curtailed energy transfer on the DC link for such action is negligible.
