Purpose: 

Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to understand the basic mechanism of a simple steam turbine, how to build one, and identify forms of energy, including heat and steam.

Hypothesis: 

Hypothesis I think that the steam rising from the hole wil l push and spin the wheel blade along.

Materials: 

Materials Drinks Can Barbecue Stick Thick foil food tray Screw Scissors Water Gas Cooker

Procedure: 

Procedure 1. P unch two holes into the top of a full soft drinks can, one in the middle and one on the side 1.5cm away. 2. Empty the drink and pour 100ml of water into the empty can. 3. Cut a circle of 8cm diameter from the foil tray and snip in towards the center of the circle like the picture on the left.

Procedure: 

Procedure 4. Twist the circle’s blades and poke a hole in the center. 5. Cut a strip of 20x3cm from the foil tray, punch a hole in the middle of the strip. 6. M ake a U-shaped stand with the strip on top of the drinks can and screw the screw into the strip’s hole and the middle hole on the can.

Procedure: 

Procedure 7. Poke a hole in the stand 5cm up on each side, p ush the stick into the holes and carefully threading the wheel as well. The steam turbine is ready for testing!

Observations: 

Observations During the experiment, I saw that when the wheel blade was being blown by the steam, it spun and then drifted off to the side. This happened because the wheel wasn’t stable and it could move about on the stick when the steam blew it.

Conclusion: 

Conclusion In this experiment, I saw minor defects in the steam turbine. The wheel blade was drifting away too much when the steam came rising and the stand wasn’t that stable. This made the steam turbine inefficient.

THE BIG IDEA: 

THE BIG IDEA The self-made steam turbine related to the modern day steam turbine. The boiling water in the power plant steam turbine turns into steam, the steam turns the turbine, and the turbine generates electricity which is transferred to the e lectricity wires.
