This movie brings to light the growing problem of grandchildren and grandparents losing that special bond and the terrible damage to does. There are over 20 million people in this country who have lost their right to being a part of their grandchildrens lives. No child should have to suffer this loss but there are not laws in this country to protect these children. This movie is a must see for everyone and hopefully it will be the vehicle to change. Premium member Presentation Transcript : IWanna Go Home… : IWanna Go Home… Slide 3: “Everyone needs to have access both to grandparents and grandchildren in order to be a full human being…: ~Margaret Mead Slide 4: I WANNA GO HOME is being produced to draw attention to one of the most vital, yet overlooked, struggles taking place in our society today – the struggle for: GRANDPARENT’S Rights According to the U.S. Census Bureau: “Relatives regularly provide child care to almost half [47%]of the more than 19 million preschoolers” : According to the U.S. Census Bureau: “Relatives regularly provide child care to almost half [47%]of the more than 19 million preschoolers” Slide 6: …among the 11.3 million children younger than 5 – 49% are cared for by a grandparent… on a regular basis 37% of the population, over the age of 50 (that’s 130+ million people) nearly 70% of them are grandparents : 37% of the population, over the age of 50 (that’s 130+ million people) nearly 70% of them are grandparents Slide 8: 8.5 million Grandparents are legally being prevented from visiting or seeing their grandchildren. Slide 9: Parents Rights or Grandparents Rights ITS ABOUT THE CHILDREN And, when you stop and think about it, its NOT about: Slide 10: DIVORCE DEATH NEGLECT ABUSE WHATEVER OR WHOMEVER GETS BLAMED – PROBABLY ISN’T EVEN CLOSE TO BEING THE “REAL” REASON… Slide 11: It’s generally “something else” that causes all the pain and suffering for more than 60 million Americans today. Slide 12: And, its an issue that is increasing in relevance… since all 50 states have enacted “grandparent’s rights laws” – most allow for grandparent visits… But, when parents oppose the visits… they can prevent them. Slide 13: Six Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court sided with parents over grandparents… arguing that: “… so long as the child is NOT being harmed, the United States Constitution gives parents a fundamental right to raise their children without governmental interference.” Slide 14: Even though all states have enacted some form of stature, giving grandparents rights… the scope varies significantly between states – approximately 40% have very restrictive visitation statutes. Which takes us to the very HEART of our story… Slide 15: You see, Jerry (our main character) never thought anything like that would – or could – happen to him. And, when it did – he thought he was the only one. But he came to find that he was just another “orphaned grandfather. How could grand-parenting – such a normal part of the life cycle – be so fragile? Slide 16: Disenfranchised grandparents are part of an increasing population in these fractured families… who are UNREASONABLY being denied … visitation with their grandchildren, by the parent(s) Slide 17: And… these circumstances can affect anyone… there is no discrimination. Who you are doesn’t matter – to the law… ABUSER ENABLERS WHY? HOW? Slide 18: Grandparent’s Rights encompass Children’s Rights. Indeed, children should have the right to maintain a loving relationship with their grandparents – no matter what's going on with their parents. Slide 19: Our story brings to light the tragic reality that children are being treated as “PROPERTY” – and that this story is only one man’s journey of self-discovery as he wades into uncharted legislative, legal and unrewarding territory. Slide 20: Our Grand Wish Is that the special – deeply significant bond between grandparent and grandchild will – by telling this story – bring a new awareness to the problem… and, help preserve and revere one of the most precious of all relationships – that of Grandchild to Grandparent.
