He was the son of Josiah Franklin, a maker of candles and soap, and Abiah Folger, Josiah’s second wife Josiah already had seven children from his first marriage, so Benjamin had a big family. Benjamin was also the fifteenth child And was the youngest. Benjamin as a child , loved to read and write.Education: Education Franklin was only able to attend two years of school because he was poor so , he continued to do his own education by reading and teaching himself. He attended grammar school from age 8 to 10 and had some private writing and arithmetic lessons When he was 10 years of age, Franklin started working for his father.Early Life: Early Life Later, he became an apprentice to his brother James, a printer. But afterwards, ran away to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and started working in several printer shops . he was not satisfied by the immediate prospects so, he returned to Philadelphia in 1726 with the help of Thomas Denham, a merchant who employed Franklin as clerk, shopkeeper, and book keeper in his business He was appointed clerk of the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1736, and as Postmaster the following year after. in 1730 Benjamin married his childhood sweetheart, Deborah Read. They had two children, Frankie, who died at four, and Sally. Deborah also raised her husband's illegitimate son, William.Career as Author: Career as Author It was in 1733 Benjamin started publishing the famous Poor Richard's Almanack . He used to write under the name of Richard Saunders. , a poor man who needed money to take care of his carping wife. He stopped writing Almanack in 1758, the same year in which he printed Father Abraham's Sermon, also known as The Way to Wealth. Although he was ill, he also finished his autobiography.civic contributions : civic contributions Benjamin helped launch projects to pave, clean and light Philadelphia's streets. Benjamin wanted to launch a Library Company in 1731 but, Back then books were far to expensive. So, he pooled together resources, so that members could afford to buy books from England. he helped to launch the American Philosophical Society, the first one in America. He Recognized that the city needed better help in treating the sick,so Franklin brought together a group who formed the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1751. The Library Company, Philosophical Society, and Pennsylvania Hospital, that still exist today In 1736, he organized Philadelphia's Union Fire Company, the first in the city and in 1752, Franklin helped to found the Philadelphia Contribution for Insurance Against Loss by Fire Electricity: Electricity In 1749 he retired from business and started concentrating on science, experiments, and inventions. In 1743, he had already invented a heat-efficient stove that was called the Franklin stove . This helped to warm houses efficiently. Among Franklin's other inventions are swim fins, the glass armonica (a musical instrument) and bifocals. In the early 1750's he turned to the study of electricity. What brought Franklin international fame was his observations, including his kite experiment which verified the nature of electricity and lightning.Political Scene : Political Scene In 1764 Franklin lost his seat in the Pennsylvania Assembly. Franklin was elected to the Second Continental Congress and helped to draft the Declaration of Independence. Though much of the writing is Thomas Jefferson's, much of the contribution is Franklin's . And In 1776 Franklin signed the Declaration, and afterward sailed to France as an ambassador to the Court of Louis XVI. The government of France signed a Treaty of Alliance with the Americans in 1778. Franklin signed the Treaty of Paris in 1783, after the Americans had won the Revolution.
