Universal Design For Learning

PowerPoint Presentation:

Universal Design for Learning is: An instructional method that helps teachers develop a curriculum that meets the needs of all students.

PowerPoint Presentation:

“UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs” (CAST, 2011). “Provides alternatives so that every student can learn” ( Laureate Education, 2010). “Builds flexibility into curricular materials” (Laureate Education, 2010). “The UDL framework encourages creating flexible designs from the start that have customizable options, which allow all learners to progress from where they are and not where we would have imagined them to be” (National Center on Universal Design for Learning, 2011).

Principles o f UDL

PowerPoint Presentation:

Principle I: Provide Multiple Means of Representation Principle II: Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression Principle III: Provide Multiple Means of Engagement

Three Primary Brain Networks:

Recognition Network Strategic Network Affective Network Principle I: Three Primary Brain Networks The "what" of learning. Principle II: The "how" of learning. Principle III: The "why" of learning.

Recognition Network:

Recognition Networks enable us to identify and interpret patterns of sound, light, taste, smell, and touch. Recognition Network As teachers, understanding the pattern of strengths and weaknesses within a learner's recognition networks can help us individualize the kind of challenge and support we provide, thus maximizing every student's opportunity to learn.

Strategic Network:

Strategic Networks tell the learner how to do things by monitoring and carrying out actions. Strategic Network Understanding the way strategic network function and the differences in students' strategic networks is a useful guide when teaching skills and strategies such as predicting, summarizing, and determining the steps needed to solve a problem or write an essay.

Affective Network :

Affective Networks determine what is important and provide the motivation for learning. Affective Network Students have many different motivating factors that are based on individual differences in culture, emotional states, interests, level of challenge, history of success with the activity, and so on.

This link provides information concerning the importance of technology in UDL http:// teacher.scholastic.com/products/ReadAbout/research/webinars_rose.htm “Providing all students with access to technology in the regular classroom provides them with opportunities to gain skills that will serve them well after they leave school” (Bray, Brown, Green, 2004, p. 2) “Powerful digital technologies applied using UDL principles enable easier and more effective customization of curricula for learners” (National Center on Universal Design for Learning, 2011).

Benefits Of UDL in the Pre-Kindergarten Classroom

PowerPoint Presentation:

Provides flexibility that allows educators to reach out to each student. Allows teachers to communicate with students and provide them with effective feedback and recognition. Allows students to make choices in their learning. Provides students with an opportunity to be an active part of their learning. Helps to address the learning variability by suggesting flexible goals, methods, materials, and assessments that empower educators to meet the varied needs of each student.

Helpful Resources:

Helpful Resources UDL Curriculum Self Check “Use this site to help you apply UDL principles in your teaching to reach and engage all of your students”. This site contains a quick assessment that allows educators to see how effective they are in meeting the needs of all students. CAST UDL: Lesson Builder “The CAST Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Lesson Builder provides educators with models and tools to create and adapt lessons that increase access and participation in the general education curriculum for all students”. CAST UDL: Book Builder “Use this site to create, share, publish, and read digital books that engage and support diverse learners according to their individual needs, interests, and skills”.
