Beetle Downturn: 

Beetle Downturn In early 1970’s. Beetle’s sales began declining across the world. The decline was most alarming in it’s largest market US. High competition in small car segment from Japanese compact and technological advanced cars. Launch of Super Beetle in 1971. Volkswagen changed it strategy.

Stopped production at Wolfsburg “Town of the Beetle” in 1974. In 1974, Launched Golf and Scirocco in Germany. US govt. stringent the regulations on safety and emission of the automobile industry. Golf launched in US under the name of “Rabbit”. Customers stopped buying Beetle. In 1979, Volkswagen stopped Beetle production in all countries except Brazil and Mexico.

After Beetle: 

After Beetle Volkswagen began focusing on strengthening its product portfolio in the late 1970’s. Launched other cars Jetta cars and Volkswagen trucks in 1979. To be show their global interest changed their name from “ Volkswagewerk AG” to “Volkswagen AG”. In 1985 added “Intelligent four wheel drive” models to its portfolio. In 1986, Volkswagen acquired SEAT, a leading Spanish automobile company.

In 1991, also acquired Skoda. In early 1990’s Volkswagen was the clear leader in the German car market through its four car brands, Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda. Early 1990’s Volkswagen faced many problems in managing global operations. Volkswagen posted loss of $1.1 billion in 1993. Beginning of the return of the Beetle.
