The 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show will be a trip to a tropical heaven. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has announced that the theme of the 2012 Flower Show will be “Islands of Aloha,” bringing the balmy winds of tranquil paradise to Philadelphia from March 4-11, 2012. To give you a taste of what to expect come this spring, we have a few highlights to share. When you enter the show, you’ll be welcomed to the Hawaiian Islands, a.k.a the Pennsylvania Convention Center, through a giant wave of orchids arching over the entrance. Tropical plants will rise around cascades of towering waterfalls. All six Big Islands will be represented in showcase gardens that highlight each unique culture through flowers, plants, stories entertainment and vibrant art. The show will be rife with interactive elements, as the goal for the show is to completely immerse you. A Hawaiian Village and Marketplace will entice visitors to watch artists and craftspeople working on-site. Guests will also be invited to a traditional Hawaiian luau, featuring hula dancing, music and more. The Philadelphia International Flower Show raises significant funds to support PHS’s community greening programs and other civic initiatives in Philadelphia. 2012 Philadelphia International Flower ShowWhen: March 4-11, 2012Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, 12th and Arch StreetsCost: Tickets start at $15More info: www.theflowershow.com

The Experience When you enter the Philadelphia Flower Show, you’ll experience a heady dose of spring — just when it’s most needed. Share the delight with the thousands of visitors from around the globe who tour 10+ acres of indoor display space to celebrate the beauty of plants and the art of gardening. Revel in the lush floral displays, examine the competitive specimen plants and be inspired by the creative garden designs and flower crafts. Pause for a few moments to learn from the experts, who give talks on the floor of the show, or ask questions at the information booths. Be sure to shop at the Marketplace — featuring more than 130 vendors — for the perfect tool, book, plant or other garden gift. History The Philadelphia Flower Show is deeply rooted in the history of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), which was founded in 1827. Charter members brought interesting plants to display at meetings and, eventually, to share with the public. In the 1960s, PHS took over management of the Philadelphia Flower Show, also encouraging participation by amateurs — individuals and garden clubs. With the help of hundreds of volunteers the show raises significant funds to support PHS’s community greening programs and other civic initiatives in Philadelphia.

I don’t need to go all the way to Hawaii when I need an orchid fix. Many of you are likely familiar with Waldor Orchids in Linwood, NJ (not far from Atlantic City). For years and years Waldor has contributed outstanding exhibits to the Flower Show and, frankly, I can’t imagine having a Show without them. Now that I’m tasked with bringing Hawaii to Philadelphia, I’m counting on Walter Off and the entire Waldor team to populate the central feature with hundreds of orchids of all shapes and colors. We’ve met a few times to brainstorm and create tentative plant lists. The details will be ironed out in the months ahead, but I can say this much: if you like orchids, you’re going to love the 2012 Flower Show.
